After the main male lead audition session was over, the tired Seo and Lee went to have a coffee break with Jang. Jang revealed to them that Aden was under his portfolio and he was the one who sent him there for casting. Jang asked for their trust and foresight to believe in him this once on this matter. Obviously Seo and Lee were taken in by surprise. Jang then asked Seo for this favour following for all the cans of coffee he rendered over the times, can he not redeem them for a favour? Seo was surprise at the request. She will honoured it for all the cans of coffee and kimbaps she had eaten under Jang’s expenses but not this is not the way.
Jang was persistence in his own foresight on Aden, being able to pull it off. Seo looked to Lee for support, only to find, he (Lee) totally agreed to what Jang had said. Seo was angry that she is left alone to defend in this debate. She insisted with her argument that Oh’s supporting lead must be an A-class actor. Jang argued that he (male lead) is an mixed parentage, very confident but yet slightly tragic. He will be the best person to blend with Eun Young’s 7 years old character. Seo commented that he will be “An American who only speaks English on screen.” Lee agreed with Jang and said his reason doesn’t fall far from Jang. Although there is a certain language barrier, but on the whole feel will be a beneficial to the outlook of the script.
Lee also said that it is not to just any man as (Jang) will not said to trust him, if he is not sincere with his words. Lee said Seo had enough of her say, that she should allowed the two men who were here to ask Seo just trust in them (Jang & Lee) this once. Seo went on defending that they were the ones who did not trust her, and why should she do so, and accused that they are in lead on this and it was all up to them, she doesn’t care and walks off. Both men sighed
Seo then called to ask for a copy of the audition tape on the casting on Aden’s audition and asked Aden to be present at viewing. Seo reviewed the tapes with Aden. Aden was saying his dialogue very coldly and almost to the point like he was giving instructions, rather that delivery his lines. Aden gave Seo a point or two about cross culture. (What is normal practice in Korea, may not necessary apply to another country).
Seo: Why did you use such a simplified & speak so slowly in your dialogue?
(Dialogue started to begin in English. Soon Yoon Ah’s English is passable, at least can be comprehend at just one listen, rather having to rewind it back again to heard it for a second time)
Seo: E-n-g-l-i-s-h? Why did you act like that?
Aden: Pardon me?
Seo: The other actors were soft and smiling in the scene, but you’re…so serious? The scene is written to smile in the script. Didn’t you see?
Aden: I just….couldn’t smile
Seo was surprised by Aden’s reply. Aden said that this lawyer would not be in such a good mood to smile, if he had to travel 10 or more hours to honour a favour.
Aden: This guy. He is an International lawyer from Australia. He is meeting Eun Young for the first time…you can call her…her father’s. Sure! But still all that travelling with that kind of favour. Come On! They weren’t that close. Okay! For Korean, this situation might be normal, but for any other country this kind of favour is…somewhat…rude.
Seo was not impressed, but did pondered whether he was right
Aden: That is why, he meets Eun Young for the first time, he treats her as if she was pain in his butt. At with this distance in the begining, he gets closer…will be much more alive in the end
Seo was taken aback by Aden’s interpretion in explaination. Then Seo continued
Seo: What do you think about the scene before? Speak freely.
Aden: Right now?
Seo: This is your only time… to say anything
Aden: That not…really fair
Seo: Why not?
Aden: Well. I’m not sure, but maybe the story is about two sisters who separated for twenty years. I mean you can’t just…yeah! Twenty years and with all that time period, don’t you think…take at least a few hours to feel these feelings….as an actor.
Seo was dumbfounded,
I remembered when I was in film school, the dialogue director, who had worked on the movie “Anastasia” staring Amy Irving came to give us a session in directing. We were given a scene, “waiting for a bus.” Although we are not actors, but we are given a chance to see the emotion of the character and the portrayal of the character by the actor. He gave a walkman to hear, in it, a set of question which we are to act as replies. From the audience, it look like the person is actually a person waiting for a bus rather that an actor trying to act that he is waiting for a bus. It is the role of the scriptwriter later the director to convey the written to action. It is the actors’ part to be able to portrayal that character as human being as possible rather then a cardboard character. This is what is called character acting. I believe Oh will have difficulty in it, as she is not very charitable about her own feelings and emotions.
Seo asked Assistant PD Choe to call Lee and asked to call Jang that she will honour his favour. Seo in the end was please at the outcome.
Jang handed over the gift given by Aden, dropped by the office to Oh when she didn’t answer his calls. Jang asked Oh to take a look what it is. It looks like an IPod. Jang heard from him that he was her English tutor. He said he was sorry that he couldn’t able to complete the lessons, so he recorded the lesson on it. If she is free, to have a listen to it. Jang asked why Oh never pick up his call. She wanted to but he was not in Korea anymore. Jang told he will still here that he (Jang) had make him stay. Oh was surprised and asked why. Jang told her that “Ticket to the moon”’s male lead will be his to play. He had him (Aden) to do an audition. Oh looked shocked.
Oh then angrily told Jang which right frame of mind is he in, to give permission for Aden to cast next to her. Jang wanted to know the reason for her refusal. Oh said that Seo will disgreed for using a newcomer.
Oh Seung Ah was a very different person in front of Aden. It is her real self with a set of emotions and feelings rarely see in the haughty and arrogant Oh Seung Ah. Even with Jang she is not as comfortable as she is with Aden. This is why she was dead against Aden’s casting as Aden is someone from her private life
Oh went to meet (confront) Seo to see if their previous stand still stand. Oh was still presistence not to have to act with a newcomer, and asked why Seo was so ficker in her decision. Seo burst out to asked why is everybody on her case. Oh in her return haughty self said she will boycott the reading.
It is funny that the Korean cannot pronounce the “r” sound and end up hearing it as “Leading”
Reading is a run through and familiarisation of the script with the actor and actress playing their respective role to give a structure to the script. It also give them the brief on how the character are meant to play and the actor to come up with their own abilities to bring the character out. This is usually done in the beginning or some time later, if there is difficulty in the scene. It is common to call these readings frequently with so for historical drama where dialogue was not common with everyday usage, such as court language. This is shown in the likes of Dae Jang Geum. I would say, PD Lee Byeon Hoon is very persistence in his version of what he wants to shown on the screen. PD will allow some leadways, but usually they are very dictatorial about it. I am sure he had a great time debating his views with Lee Young Ae
I have a feeling that Oh need a support of an experience actor to follow through with her acting. She was still not confident with her own acting skill to able to hold the scene on her own.
On returning to her office, Cherry was there doing a bit of a bribery. A slice of cheese cake. Seo chased Cherry out. Before that Seo asked her to get a hairstyle befitting a professional doctor rather that a crazy woman
At the station. Lee has not get together all the materials to start shooting. Remember he doesn’t have a crew yet.
Cherry had to cut her hair. She was crying that it took her 3 years to grow her hair. Something was said that her head is lacking of some substance (maybe IQ) that her hair had a slow growth rate. CEO Jin asked she could rest for 3 years after the drama to grow her hair. Cherry found there was no press coverage on her in regards to the drama since she is the main lead. CEO Jin got a call from the advertsing agency to let him know that the CF for “Cinderella” shampoo & cosmestic, that the both were pitching before, have been given to Oh.
In the advertising agency, they have taken account to the comments or more like criticism Oh made the other day, so they had decide to use her. As the scene suggest it was the first wedding night and the bridegroom would be played by Song Chang Ui. It is claimed by them that Song was the man a lot of woman will like to be marry to - a perfect bridegroom and husband. Oh didn’t show any interest. Oh asked a name card from the agency.
I would think Oh planned to do the CF on the day of the reading.
Aden got his male lead role. Jang offered a living quarters to Aden. Aden thanked Jang for not only giving one of life’s chances, but all 3 of them. Aden was still worried of Oh still being against it. Jang assured him.
Jang came to Oh to discuss on the matter. Oh confessed she doesn’t want to carry newcomer on her side. If it failed, that she will be liable and she don’t have the confidence, and she doesn’t want to ruin it for Aden. She wanted it more for Aden to succeed.
Jang asked her when will be she keep going to be like this. Oh asked why Jang was not on her side protecting her. She left sobbing.
On the other hand. Lee wanted Seo to make changes to Episode 5 and 6 as there is some continuity issue. Seo and Lee quarrelled over the issue. Episode 4 said the male lead was a knight in shining amour, and the only person that Eun Young can confined in, and yet in Episode 5 and 6 it doesn’t have that essence. Seo explained verbally but Lee told her that it does not reflected in her script at all of what she have just said
Seo told him he approved of Episode 5, Lee replied that he great believer in her works. Lee asked her to make changes before the reading. Seo went in and was taken in by his statement. But due to her stubborness, she refused to make the changes. Lee shouted at her to asked where are her priorities. Seo answered him back tactfully, she warned him if he ever change one of her dialogue, he will not hear the end of her. Silence, then a phone call PD Yun called that Oh was not coming for the first reading. Seo then called Jang to settle it.
Jang met a haughty arrogant Oh at a ice-cream parlour and she told him she will not do the reading. CF is her bread & butter. Jang was out of his wits, looking off and staring at space for long periods of time just pondering. (Typical Kdrama classic). This is how I imagine, they marketed on the sales of their OST). Out of boredom Oh took out Aden’s gift for a listen. Lee was walking aimlessly in the street trying to get a smoke and realised that he doesn’t have a lighter and looked at a window display to see the mannequin wearing a pink stripe tie. Seo looking at the lighter from some massage parlour that Lee left behind
The next morning, Jang was outside Oh’s house. Jang asked her to decide to go for the reading or the CF. Oh threaten to call the police and Jang dare her
At the reading. Seo came to the station and spotted Lee wearing a shirt and tie. Lee asked whether it was up to the expection. Seo shyly or embarassly agreed. A staff came by, to tell them that Oh and Jang were now at the police station
Oh was accusing Jang of trespassing private property. Police rebuked them for being petty. Meanwhile the police asked Oh for her autograph, which she signed. Out of the station. Oh asked where the car was, her assistant answer that the driver went to buy tofu. (In Korea, it is customary to buy tofu as a sign of cleansing the evils away, usually practise if you just came out from lock up or prison and not usually just coming out from a police station). Lee and Seo came by the police station. Seo asked why did they end up in the police station. Jang said it does not matter. Seo tactfully asked Oh was there a need for the CF to shoot in a police station, much to Oh’s dismay. Jang invited them to have a drink.
I always like these two ladies exchange of words in their arguments.
Seo started flying her two cents worth at Oh and wouldn’t take any excuses. Lee and Jang told Seo whether she was going overboard with her words. Then Seo gave her two cents worth at the men, first to Jang, not to use their personal relationship on the matter. There is an idiom “zhen dun chuan fu” - consolidate with the oarsman. (It means that everybody giving some opionions may lead to straying to nowhere, there should be one person to control). Seo was taking control and trying to consolidate the matter as it now on the brink of collapse. It looked like Seo have taken the role of the oarsman on this matter. She looked so much to be in charge.
Seo got a call from CEO Jin. CEO Jin was fishing for news over the cancellation of reading. CEO Jin went on to polish Seo’s apples on the script. Seo then recalled on what Lee said on to the script changes. Seo asked to recall all the Episode 5 and 6 scripts and that she will make the changes, it will cause a delay and Oh can go ahead to shoot her CF
Cinderella CF shoot
Press flashing their camera. Director giving a brief on the storyboard. In the CF, Oh and Song were newly wed couple and while Song (bridegroom is in the shower), she applied the Cinderella cosmetics. Oh trying to be cute with Song with some laughing NGs takes
Storyboards are usually a great applicable tool for CF and movie, not so much with dramas because of their length. Alfred Hitchcock had all his movies done in a storyboard, so everybody knew what is going on. It was the bible from the cast to the crew
Seo was busy typing at her laptop and drinking litres of coffee. In this business cigarettes (if you smoke) and coffee goes hand in hand.
Aden was practising his lines. Jang did laundry for Aden.

Lee came back to see an exhausted sleeping Seo on the sofa, made her comfortable and looked on at the sleeping Seo
CEO Jin barged into the Seo’s fat lady agent and demanded why they have casted a person of mixed parentage. They have never been a foreigner who is cast as the male lead. The fat lady told him off, he did the same when he wanted Cherry to be the female lead. Remembered that Cherry resembled an air head rather that an actress of substance, so why not having a mixed parentage person for a male lead. PD Yun’s emphasis that the main character in the story was the two sisters (Cherry and Oh). CEO Jin asked for more screen time for Cherry.
CEO Jin went to meet Lee for a meal with Cherry for that purpose. Cherry has a bob cut hairstyle. She looked nice in it. CEO Jin tried to dictate terms with Lee. He wanted Cherry to sing the OST. Lee disagreed that he wanted Cherry to be in character and not goes off taking her mind on other interests. CEO Jin gave out some threats to Lee on his influences.
Lee and Cherry met Oh outside the restaurant. Cherry tried to make a scene, but is brushed off by Lee that she must be in more of Eun Sok’s character. Oh asked Lee for the photos in Taiwan. Lee said he had deleted them. Oh told him she doesn’t like her private photos to be in the hand of others.
Oh and Aden meet at the same restaurant.
Aden: I heard you were against me. I completely understand. I wouldn’t disappoint you, I promise. I do my best. (in English)
Oh answered in Korean
Oh: Do you best? If you don’t, I will not let you off the hook
Aden: Do you agree then? Is that what you mean?
Oh: No. I will act with you in this drama because you and I have sign the contract. In the film set, you will not be able to recognise the Oh Seung Ah you know. Now this is the Oh Seung Ah that you will see.
Lee was still in a fix without the proper film technician. Lee went through the showreels of the director, and came upon a director Hong Soon Gul, who is reputed to be a playboy. Lee asked to see him since he should be well verse with woman should be able to make a woman film well.
Director Hong went the station. He met someone he know, who tells of Lee’s gossips. Lee appeared to meet Hong. Hong was the guy on the bike outside the fried chicken shop (Bong Sik Chicken), where Lee tried to get the owner to make a comeback as his director. Hong suggested that he will persuade the owner but also get thrown out.
Lee called Oh for some drinks and fried chicken. Lee told Oh that he seeked the help from the owner. Lee gave the Taiwan photos to Oh and asked for them to be signed. Lee asked if she were to achieve the status of Grace Kelly after 30 years, what will it be. “Do you know how much these photos may be valued for”. What “High Noon” did to represent Grace Kelly, I hope “Ticket to the Moon” will do the same for Oh Seung Ah.
A discussion on Grace Kelly in High Noon compared to the Hitchcock epics, famously for “Dial M for Murder” & “Rear Window”. Grace Kelly had the beauty and the talent as an actress. Oh admited that Hitchcock love his leading ladies, and Oh said she is very hard to be liked and walked away. Lee had no way to get through with her.
Reading. The actor and actresses read their parts. Oh read her lines flat without expression. Seo is shock and angry by Oh’s lack of enthusiasm. Lee gave them a 5 minutes break. Seo walked out in disgust.
Lee said to Seo it was only a reading, and shouldn’t take it to an account. Actors will not give 100% in readings, Seo replied that it wasn’t even 50%. Jang walked in at their discussion and apologised. Seo asked him why he is apologising. Reading continued. Cherry read her lines and Oh coldly read hers. Cherry made a comment why is she reading this way and asked Seo to intervene. Seo told Oh that she cannot be Oh Seung Ah now but to be Go Eun Young. Oh just stared at Seo’s direction. Everybody at the reading just all looked towards Seo’s direction

Just that everybody now think “Ticket to Moon” is going to be a success. One of the actress at the hairdresser or some location regretted that she didn’t audition for it. You need to spot the cameo appearance of that actress
