Spotlight - Episode 1 Summary

I do know that the opening episodes didn’t do too well in the ratings, but it is not the point, we will take this drama at face value

Before I proceed to write the summary to Spotlight, I will like to do an introductory to broaden your perspective of this media industry we call “Broadcasting Journalism”. Journalism usually associated to the printed material media, but with the introduction of television & radio we find this media becoming a part & parcel of our live that with the touch of a button of our remote control.

Most types that cover are News, Reportage Editorial & Education which breaks down to Arts, Business, Entertainment, Environment, Fashion Politics, Science, Tech, Sport, Trade, Traffic & Weather. So it seems to that we see this being reported on Network channel we watch everyday.

Broadcasting Journalism consists of 2 parts. There are front of the camera & the one behind it.

In front of the camera, in the studios. We have the Anchors (we don’t call them newsreaders) who are the main lead supported by Co-Anchors. Anchors usually read from teleprompter that why they are always staring straight at the camera when they deliver the news. Reading will be alternated to not to give a monotonous feel to it. Anchors also read the news cold without any display of emotions

Then there is the on location or scene, we have the Reporters, with a set of Video camera crew & Assistant. The Crew holds the camera & the Assistant who handles lighting & audio, & of course the reporter in front of the location with his/her microphone reporting lives on the situation on hand. There are plenty of those reporters after the recent cyclone in Myanmar & the great earthquake in Sichuan, where journalists make their reporting coldly when tragedies is surrounding them.

The behind of it you get the technicians. In control of what the audience is seeing on television is the Newscaster Director, which may be supported by a Technical Director who control & operation the video switcher in which he control all flows of element of the show. In a life show, location reporting you may get a mobile unit with portable facilities which are control by a Newscaster Director, to send live pictures back to the studio. I will explain further as we go along to bring you an insight to the world of broadcast Journalism of Global Broadcasting System (GBS) & the life of people who works there who works in the Society News channel department. Cue!

It is night outside the broadcasting station. A lady is crying (we identify her as Kim Mi Hee who is the one of the main anchor for the 9 O’clock Night news. She discovered that her husband, Technical Director Lee is having external marital affairs outside.)

Kim Mi Hee: You scoundrel.

She slaps Technical Director Lee (TD Lee)

TD Lee: I’m sorry, yobo (Honey or wife)

Kim Mi Hee: How can you? How can you do this?

TD Lee: I’m sorry. I….have anything to say.

Kim Mi Hee leaves & walks back to the station. In the station there is a group of fans waiting for SS501. Kim Mi Hee tries to push her way through.

Kim Mi Hee: Excuse me…Excuse me

The fans run after her.

Kim Mi Hee: I’m sorry. I need to go on broadcast. Kim Mi Hee enters the evaluator & a female staff stops her.

Hyun Jin: Unni….Unni. Where have you been? You didn’t answer your phone? This is the bulletin. It’s said it need to be discuss, you need to enter to the studio in 10 mins prior.

Kim Mi Hee looks at her watch. (In broadcasting the crucial is that the timing is essential, every millisecond needs to be taken to account. As the whole environment is done in “Live” situation, it is hardly a place to have foul ups. There is plenty of adrenalin flowing & panic prangs). Kim Mi Hee doing makeup at the news desk at the studio as she prepares herself with mouth exercises. Another Anchor comes in. A male anchor, Anchor Kim Gung Jin (we will address him as Anchor Kim, since both Anchors have the same surname)

Anchor Kim: Good evening. You don’t look well, is it because it is you final broadcast that you are feeling slightly sad or is it that the Commission Board of Trustee are here that you are nervous?

Kim Mi Hee just smiles. She shouldn’t be happy after the quarrel she had with her husband outside the station just now.

In the news room

News programmer: No.1 news to bring forward. No.7 to delete, there is also on location “Live” reporting. I definitely can’t determine the timing for this, just be prepare for it.

Hyun Jin: Yes. Young Ji ssi, just add this in, please help. An Jung ssi, there is an International news, take this & be prepare for it.

Hyun Jin was running to play postman. The clock is now 5 mins to 9 o’ clock. Hyun Jin was running at the corridor to the News centre as well as the Control Room. This is the epicenter of broadcasting. Hyun Jin passes the bulletin to the TD Lee.

Hyun Jin: This is the revised bulletin.

TD Lee prepares for the news broadcast & there are 3 very tense looking gentlemen.

Technician: Shall we go for a countdown

TD Lee: Yes, go ahead.

In the Studios, beside the news desk where the Anchors read the news, there are 3 television cameras that cover. When the camera is lighted with a red line, it means that the camera is alive & the Anchor needs to look at it straight at it.

TD Lee: 3 mins to go

Anchors prepare themselves & adjusting their clip mics & warming up the muscles of their mouth. Broadcasting officially use the official language of choice, it is very narrative in nature.

Back at the Control Room. The three gentlemen are first Ahn Jung Suk is the Society Department Control Officer. Then Broadcasting Controller Min Jae Guk then flow by the political Department Control Officer. Please excuse if I got the Hangul of their name wrong. I also don’t know the organization chart of this particular broadcasting station. I will just stick to the designation that I know. They are there as the Commission of the Board of trustee is paying a visit.

Ahn Jung Suk: It feels like the Headmaster is coming for inspection. The Broadcasting Commission Board of Trustee, why do they need to visit the news channel & gets us all panic

Jung Jae Guk: They are the Commission Board of trustee, the one they really want to see is Anchor Kim Mi Hee’s final broadcast live

Ahn Jung Suk: Yes it seems so. Anchor Kim Mi Hee broadcasting for us have been priceless. If she continues it would have been better. Why need to be persistently stubborn to go overseas to master her perspectives?

Min Jae Guk: Quiet! They are here

Staff: The trustees are here.

Trustee: Well Done….. Well Done….. Well Done…..

As the trustee passes along the gentlemen with handshakes

TD Lee: Anchor.

Anchor Kim: Good evening. This is GBS Night News Spotlight. Today we bring the news topics that have not been optimistic. The prison escapee Jang Jin Chul has emerged. The killer apprehended who have violently killed 12 victims, the investigation have been concluded today.

Kim Mi Hee: The next, we bring you to our 1st news segment. The prison escapee Jang Jin Chul from Kang Wan Do, scenes of his emerges has been reported. The police have so far made 3 attempts to apprehend him but was unsuccessful. If this should fail then the Police credibility would be undermined & would have to be negligence on their part. Now we have Jae Young reporting

Ahn: I didn’t know of it earlier. There is always a 1st time.

On location

Seo exercising her mouth & looks very tense.

Seo Woo Jin: The accused Yu Hyun Ji in the saga of the prison escapee that violently killed 12 victims…Ah!….Ah….The police in a short while will bring charges to the accused. The National Internal Affairs will investigate & study….The Internal Affairs….National…Ah! Today why is my tongue all tangle up.

Cameraman: Don’t be nervous.

Seo Woo Jin: Because of these crimes, provides the terms…because of these crimes….ah! eh! However in the midst of the police investigation, Yu Hyun Ji has overturn the past statement…overturn the past….

News: As the result of the Police mishandling of the investigation, Jang Jin Chul has been using the same tactics to have looted the high security gold vault. The Police are looking around into this crime & concentrate on this part of this investigation. The others are investigating the surrounding areas for clues. GBS News, Choe Ju reporting.

Trustee making some whisper

In the location at the police station. Mobile Unit of GBS is set up. They are shooting in HDTV (High Definition Television). Technical set up with link to the studio via satellite. The person in charge is the News casting Director (ND).

News: In the pace of the suspect’s escape. The Police investigation is drawing to a blank into obscurity. GBS News Lu reporting

TD Lee: Anchor

Kim Mi Hee: At the present moment, the whole country’s hotels are not rule out from the killer of 12 victims. Yu Hyun Ji’s investigation has now concluded. We now link you to our Reporter who is standing by at the Nam San Police station, Seo Woo Jin is reporting. Reporter Seo

Seo Woo Jin: Yes. This is Seoul City, Nam San Police station; this have indeed cause a sensation to all the country’s hotels to be a look out for the killer. The accuse Yu Hyun Ji investigation have been concluded. Yu Hyun Ji has confess that because of her husband have overstep the boundary (having an extra marital affair) & filled with hatred & beyond forgiveness, decided to take revenge on acting out this incomprehensive behaviour that is apathetic that have lead to this attention. The Police investigation have make it clear that Yu Hyun Ji, because of her spite to her husbands’ extra marital affairs intruded into a couples inappropriate relationship in the car & committed this felony. This matter we have learned that the findings to this incident have been handled very discreetly plans. However Yu Hyun Ji in her interrogation has overturned the previous past statement. Her expression is very calm. The Police have decided to bring her to the Internal Affairs for investigation. She is seen very calm without a show of emotion.

However what direction should the victim’s family is heading to this matter? To whom, should they get the answer from? How are they going to be compensated for their loss? In a Coffee shop. Owner Jung had spotted Jang Jin Chul. Seo Woo Jin gave her the poster on Jang Jin Chul.

Owner Jung: His hairstyle is shorter & wearing glasses here, but I recognize him as Jang Jin Chul, is correct?

Seo Woo Jin: Are you sure?

Owner Jung: I can say that it is him.

Owner Jung indicates that the call is from Jang Jin Chul

A Scooter is racing down the street.

Team leader is showing a map of the area.

Team leader: Jang Jin Chul is in this motel here Team 2 will be here & here to cut off the exits. Team 1 & Detective Lee will go through here. Team 3 & I will be looking after here. Understand. Everybody be attentive. This time we need to arrest him. We need to this time. Let’s go into action.

Detective Lee comes in to the group to report.

Team leader: It is a relief that there are no reporters

Seo Woo Jin goes in to the motel & receive a call from Detective Lee.

Seo Woo Jin: Yah! Hyungnim, what is it?

Detective Lee: Reporter Seo. What are you doing there? Really! Don’t loiter around; just come out of there, quickly. We are going to go into action immediately.

Seo Woo Jin: I will go & make a cup for him & come out.

Detective Lee: Are you crazy? He could be Jang Jin Chul….Jang Jin Chul?

Seo Woo Jin: I know…I know.

Detective Lee: Killer of countless, bank robber, in addition there are more than 10 charges against him. Is Reporter Seo going to experience 1 or 2 things from him? If you persist we can’t be responsible for your safety.

Team leader: I can’t predict what will happen in there. We can’t be always waiting. There is no choice, although we need to consider Reporter Seo’s safety first. However don’t let go of the criminal. In the motel room, Seo Woo Jin is with Jang Jin Chul. Seo Woo Jin is making a cup of coffee. Jang Jin Chul is at the dressing table in a bathrobe. Seo tries to adjust her hidden camera.

Jang Jin Chul: What are you looking at?

Seo Woo Jin: Huh! Nothing.

Jang Jin Chul: Sigh! No need to stare at me. You have guessed correctly.

Seo Woo Jin: What? What have I guess?

Jang Jin Chul turns around to face Seo Woo Jin

Jang Jin Chul undoes his bathrobe to reveal that his back is heavily tattooed to Seo Woo Jin. Seo Woo Jin looks like she has some lump in the throat. Detective Lee & the police are moving in to the motel

Seo Woo Jin: But Oppa, weren’t you near Suk Chill having an encounter with the police. How did you escape from them?

i feel this film is great detpth drama and i like korean’s cinema have a change for better like this .
