We Got Married – Kim Hyun Joong & HwangBo

I am not one who followed reality shows be it by the American networks or local but I was curious enough to look into the Korean reality show of ‘We Got Married’ who had matched a couple of a 6 years gap between Hwang Bo and SS501’s Kim Hyun Joong after much hype was made on it.

Somehow, I wandered what fuss was over the age gap. It is only just a 6 years difference. Let me recap some of my best loved couples that went through me. I am going to match their off-screen age in which the leading lady is older. There is Kim Suh Ah and Hyun Bin from My Lovely Sam Soon who has a 7 years gap between them, Lee Tae Ran and Park Hae Jin in Famous Princesses who has 8 years and both these couples has won Best Couple Awards. Of course, let recap Gong Hyun Jung’s leading man age gap: Jo In Seong (Spring Days, 10 years), Chung Jung Myung (Foxy lady, 9 years), Ha Jung Woo (H.I.T, 8 years) and Kwon Sang Woo would be 5 years if Daemul had taken off. I know of one celebrity couple in which the wife is 9 years her husband’s senior and she had been married before with two kids. Things like this can happen in real-life. Kim Hyun Joong is quoted to have said that once they got to know each other better, the age gap went away.

I guess it was coupled with the fact that Kim Hyun Joong is an idol singer and relatively look much younger than his 23 years of age. I agreed that Hwang Bo may be satisfied with the choice of husband but she admits being uncomfortable. Remember there were screaming fans of his in Jeju when they embarked on their honeymoon.

All matters put aside, this is the only ‘We are Married’ couple that I followed so I find their discovery of each other is at a good pace. Quoting the ‘kid groom’ who takes up to 1.5 years to get comfortable in the relationship therefore he already indicated he has made great progress.

I managed to catch an X-Man segment where Hwang Bo was pitted against Kim Hyun Joong some 2 years ago where the player need to answer ‘Yes’ to whatever question throw to them and return the rebuke.

HB: Do you feel that you are prettier than me?

HJ: Of course. You have become tanned after serving in the Army?

HB: Of course. Isn’t it sexy? From what I heard you like girls who have tanned skin

HJ: Of course. But I don’t like women whom I can’t see at night

There is always a saying, ‘Beware of things you don’t want, you might end up with it’.

So we have it that Kim Hyun Joong really landed himself with a ‘wife’ he could not be able to see at night. Ha! Ha!

I don’t know about the start of the other couples but this couple started with a great deal of awkwardness. The couple T-Shirt was wrong, she over-dress to the BBQ, etc. I think she went slightly overboard trying to ‘mother’ him while he wants to do things perceived by her to be manly. But you simply love the things they tried working their way in this marriage. As they are warming up slowly to each other in their due speed, we wait and anticipate a slightly out of this world performance.

Hwang Bo is said to be ‘like one of the boys’ with her really robust laugh and her over the top reactions (she seems to like to roll-over). She also holds a three degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. This is why Kim Hyun Joong’s friends kept asking whether she was scary. With this visual of her it was strange to discover she has all the skill associated with being a lady of a house. She can cooked, sew and fixed things in the house. She really has the great potential of a home-maker. Ah, what a way to a man’s heart than to his stomach, she made him a pizza toast minus a few key ingredients but nevertheless she immediately made him something the moment he was hungry. Later she had gone to Japan and fixed a meal for him and his group. You know how Koreans are very fond of their own kind of food.

Despite his young age, but I think Kim Hyun Joong is on a right track made very effort to make Hwang Bo laugh and smile. He is overly concern about her health and will act on it be it with energy drinks, foot massage and buying her medicine for her flu. I believe we have looked beyond their age gap and really see this couple for the persons they are. Who can forget his words of protecting his wife from mosquitoes, would like to be Hwang Bo’s puppy and his message to his fans not to hate Hwang Bo as she is a lovely woman.

They both in their course of this ‘marriage’ found that they will be able to surpass the problem associated with age in a relationship and I think this couple will grow with some understanding. I think Hwang Bo has let her guard down as she more open with her affections towards Kim Hyun Joong after he defended her against his fans so we started to see more display of affections too.

I am looking forward to this entertaining couple.

  1. I only started watching this couple after I ran out of clips of the other couples to watch and I’m so glad I did. I love these two and I have found that age really isn’t a big deal, it is just a number. They’ve shown that they’re compatible and they can work through things together.

  3. The only times I could see the “age” with this couple is when they’re hanging out with their respective friends… that in itself it pretty hilarious.
    Both of them have a good spirit and are truly free spirited people…

  4. I love this couple. This couple is the best besides Crown J & InYoung. Like, the awkwardness and the humor between them, it’s like hawt.. And they surprise me each episode. First with the age differences, then the comic books, then the shirts, and the japan thing, then the vacation at the amusement park. Every episode i watched are like funny, funny, funny. They crack me up completely. And what i like best is that this two couple don’t fight at all. They never get mad at each other, or anything. Hwang Bo is honestly a very sexy girl, like i think it depends how she wears her hair. She has a beautiful smile, and if she puts her hair down, she looks gorgeous. And HyunJoong’s like hawt hawt hawt. I dont know, they’re like the couples i love. So are Crown J & InYoung<3 They’re funny when they fight tho (:

  8. after i watch we got married especially at joongbo part,, i think that i can accept a man that younger that me as my husband.. before this, i tried to avoid to get couple with younger boy.. but, after seeing hyun joong really take care of hwangbo and can be a good husband.. i think that i can accept it too..
    as long as my young boy can make me live happily and can feed me(hehe,, of course).. then it’s ok..

  10. three cheers to Jackie who wrote such a report abt this ssangchu couple~ ^ ^ i myself supported them! : ] i felt this is true feelings and love in between both of them. no much skin-ship, but have the kind of moral/mental support which are the most impt factor in marriage.
    as a fan/supporters we should wish them for the best! shouldn’t have any anti-fans mah..

    really enjoyed watching them, every time see them do something cute n funny will alwys b laughing out loudly!
    too bad they had ended the last episode. T_T
    oso i have new +ve views about hwangbo, she is really a “woman” that a “man” should cherish. envy hyun joong ah.. : ] and hyun joong is really funi when he speaks! really funi!

    so i really hope to see a reunion episode of both of them.
    it will b good to hear that they are really getting into real relationship in real life. (tt will b great! I SUPPORT!!!) ^^

  18. I really like KIM HYUN JOONG. I’m really shocked and sad when I found out that his already married… :bawling:

    I really admire KIM HYUN JOONG in BOYS OVER FLOWERS as JI HOO, I taught of him as a prince.. I’m really sad but at the same time I’m happy for him, I really hope that they will last FOREVER.. I wish that their relationship will continue till the end of time..

  23. i like this couple, i have to say though i like hb more.no offence but every1 makes it out like hb always the lucky one with a hot husband and stuff making it seem like hb is not worth what hj is. and i actually think its in the reverves way. Hyun Joong is lucky to have a stunningly beautiful wife who actually cares about every1 and who just happens to be the best housewife ever(my opinion)

  27. I really like the statement that Jackie has made, it is exactly my thought to both of them (incl the comment from X-Man segment which i’ve seen that as well).

    I started my liking feel to Hyun Joong after watching Flower over boys, thereafter i found WGM casted by him. Although it is fake marriage but i can feel thier true feeling to each other, but obviously they will keep this feeling into their heart which we can seen, for the reason of conservetive Koreans thought. Otherwise, there isn’t any reason for Hwang Bo who tears out in last episode as they can alway keep in touch or even start-up their loving relationship secretly.

    Anyhow, i’m always support if thier love has come true in reality as i believe Hwang Bo will take good health care of her ’shilang’ althought i don’t think ’shilang’ will loyal to his Buni forever (cause he is really too young and there are too many celebrity in the world).

    p/s: i wonder how come SS501 went to Thailand for fans meeting but never came to Malaysia, i believe they should have a lots of fans in Malaysia by now. I really wish they will consider a fans meeting in M’sia althought i knew it is highly unlikely for time being as Hyung Joon is separated to the team for drama acting at this period *sighed*

  28. Thank you for your articulate perspective on this couple. I too find Hyungjoong’s candor and Hwangbo’s compassion harmonious.

    Their bond seems very real, quite unlike other couples in reality TV shows. I give kudos to the PDs of WGM of showing the good points and blemishes in their relationship.
