Gisaeng House. Near a pond

Jeong Hyang with her servant passes by the pond after her performance where Shin Yun Bok stops her in her tracks (I have looks at the cast list, it is given as Jeong Hyang instead of Jung Hyang, my correction on it)

Shin Yun Bok stretches her hand to show the 5 nyang she earned from her sale of her drawing at the shop.

Shin Yun Bok: Can you please be able to play another tune for me to hear?

Jeong Hyang: Just an unjustifiable 5 nyang? You want to listen to a tune that is worth of 5 nyang?

Servant tries to convey the message to Shin Yun Bok

Servant: Just an unjustifiable 5 nyang…..

Shin Yun Bok interrupts

Shin Yun Bok: This 5 nyang is my every thing

Jeong Hyang glances at her then walks away only to have Shun Yun Bok grab & hold of Jang Hyang’s wrist to hold her back & turn Jeong Hyang towards her. Servant is shocked at the bodily contact

(Confucius Joseon society men & women are forbidden from bodily contact)

Jeong Hyang: What are you doing?

Shin Yun Bok: Until tomorrow, this hand of mine will no longer exist. This 5 nyang, is the exchange of sale of this hand final piece of painting that it will ever produce

Jeong Hyang feels for Shin Yun Bok

Shin Yun Bok: From the sale, I want to spend my final night, accompanied by the sound of your gayageum…together

Shin Yun Bok teary eyes pleading to Jung Hyang.

In her (Jeong Hyang’s) chambers. Jeong Hyang gives a private solo performance as Shi Yun Bok drinks as she is entertained & being drown by the sound of gayageum as Shin Yun Bok appreciated the music. She looks at her brush & then decided to paint Jung Hyang in action. She prepares the paper, as Jung Hyang strums with speed so was Shin Yun Bok’s speed in her brush strokes. As the music progresses, the painting is come alight on the paper. Music & brush stroke are in a unison orchestrate movement. Shin Yun Bok continues to produce painting after painting

(Shin Yun Bok’s birth mother was had been a celebrated gisaeng who was famous for her gayageum talents. Maybe her final days she yearns for her mother. In the brink of death, ones mostly will yearns & calls out for their own mothers)

In the end of the performance, Jeong Hyang to takes a fan to fan herself as she was sweating from her rigorous performance, admiring Shin Yun Bok while Shin Yun Bok lies in bed from exhaustion from painting. Shin Yun Bok looking at her hand & gets up to take a drink (wine) at the bottle

Jung Hyang: Why did you known before hand that such befall may happen? I am referring to that of your Teacher

Shin Yun Bok already tipsy & drunk

Shin Yun Bok: Teacher?

Shin Yun Bok focus her thoughts

(Kim Hong Do is pen name is known as Dan Won, my mistakes on the previous episode’s summary as Tam Won, it is because I am doing it by oral hearing. There is a correction here as well. I will go along to correct the misspelling of the names as I go along with the proper cast list aligned with the masses)

Shin Yun Bok: Ah! You are referring to Mr. Dan Won….is there a reason to it. Looking at it, created disturbances (chaos) to Dohwaseo, also selling vulgar paintings in the market, isn’t that without its consequences?

Jeong Hyang: Even though it is so, to have met you before this & to have heard you say that there may be some desire…..

Shin Yun Bok looks at Jeong Hyang

Shin Yun Bok: Desire?

Jeong Hyang: Desire, perhaps it is by all means, he may wants to safeguard you (Artist)

Shin Yun Bok: Safeguard?

Jeong Hyang: Perhaps, what words he had spoken to you (Artist, Jeong Hyang is referring by Shin Yun Bok’s designation) as such, may be a Teacher’s final hope

Shin Yun Bok: Hope?

Episode 3 Punishment of the Crushing of the hand (Sequel)

Someone is walking barefooted. It is Kim Hong Do in his sleep wear, curious of what the other Painter’s are looking at. He walks over to find the Punishment apparatus had someone had loaded to it

Other painters are like zombies jeering

Others: Put him to death! Put him to death

Kim Hong Do is looking around the zombies like painters. He looks at the person at the punishment contraption like someone he knew, most probable the incident that happened 10 years ago. Kim Hong Do shouts

Kim Hong Do: No!!!!

Others: Put him to death!!!!

Kim Hong Do: No!!!

(The Punishment apparatus is a wooden gantry with a stone boulder mounted on top, with the movement of a guillotine pounding down to the locked hands below)

Kim Hong Do awakes from his nightmare.

Kim Hong Do: No!!!!!!!

He looks round his surrounding to grasp back his breathing, he pours & takes a drink of water, only be shocked by the present of what looks like a paper guillotine or those stack cutter. I think it is a kitchen tool. He looks at the window, to find that it is day break, the focus his attention of the window which is being latched by a spoon, the dissolves to a tied hand, then back again to the spoon

Yi Jung Suk is bringing a tray to serve her brother Yi Yin Mun & Kim Hong Do, their breakfast

Yi Jung Suk: Please eat

Yi Yin Mun: Since your (Kim Hong Do’s) presence here, the quality of the dishes had resurrected from withers

Yi Jung Suk: Orrabunim, you are really!!!!

Yi Jung Suk runs off. Kim Hong Do looks on

Yi Yin Mun: Are you running away? How is it, it is like an imperial feast?

Kim Hong Do: Oh! Yes it is

Kim Hong Do didn’t showed much an appetite & have some worries written on his face

Yi Yin Mun: Have you made a decision yet? No matter what, there is only hope if you can go on living. Do eat well, then after, only give it some real thought on it. Don’t let one’s imagination run away from ones reality

Kim Hong Do turns around & calls Yi Jung Suk

King Hong Do: Jung Suk!

Yi Jung Suk runs out from the kitchen, happy that Kim Hong Do is calling her

Yi Jung Suk: Yes

Kim Hong Do: Can you not help me to run an errand for me?

Yi Jung Suk: What errand?

Gisaeng House, Jeong Hyang’s chambers

Shin Yun Bok is sleeping soundly as the room was left what it is since last night. She arouse from sleep & to find herself in a strange environment with a massive headache from hangover. Shin Yun Bok recalls what Jeong Hyang said to her

Jeong Hyang: Perhaps, what words he had spoken to Artist as such, may be a Teacher’s final hope

Jeong Hyang & her Servant is bringing a tray of food & walks to the door of the chambers

Jeong Hyang: Artist (Shin Yun Bok), if you are awakes, please have some breakfast

There is no answer & Jeong Hyang opens the door to find that the room is already tidy up, with a painting is being weight by a wine bottle

Servant: What has happened?

Jeong Hyang: I’m not sure

Jeong Hyang walks in & takes the bottle away to find the painting that Shin Yun Bok paint of her last night. It is her playing the gayageum. She holds it up, she studies it with appreciation then goes to read the poetry that accompany the painting

Poetry: Plumes pluck soaring endless, Strings snaps, music never decrease. It will never cease in slumber dream

Jeong Hyang is please with the painting

Shin Hang Pyeong’s room. He is contemplating as he watches out the window

Kim Hong Do: If it comes to this, the child who painted it may perhaps lost his right to use his hands

Shin Hang Pyeong: Does this mean I need to forsake the position of the being a member of the Royal Bureau of Painting

(A member of the Royal Bureau Painting had the right to use the King’s seal in his painting as an endorsement. This of course will put value to the painting)

Shin Yun Bok return to Dohwaseo, standing in the entrance to meet her doom. She enters. Meanwhile a eunuch is leading Kim Hong Do. He is holding a roll up scroll as he meets Jeongjo. The eunuch announce Kim Hong Do’s arrival

Eunuch: Chona! Artist Kim Hong Do wishes to meet your presence

Jeongjo: Enter

Eunuch: Yes

Kim Hong Do present Shin Yun Bok’s painting of Queen Dowager Jeong Sun to Jeongjo

Jeongjo: Is it today?

Kim Hong Do: Yes it is? This is the day the ritual ceremony ends, Dohwaseo will execute to carry out the punishment of the crushing of the hand

Jeongjo looking through the painting

Jeongjo: If time can stop, definitely would want & hope to keep this person at heart. This painting is clear & distinct, to bring about some share of feelings. Who is this person who drew this actually?

Kim Hong Do: Now at this moment, he is just one of the mere Dohwaseo’s apprentices

Jeongjo: Just mere apprentice?

Kim Hong Do: This apprentice from now & until the future will never be able to raise his brush to do another painting. His strokes are delicate beyond beauty. His movement of brush strokes is liquid, also leaves a feeling of endless painful suffering of miss & long for. Don’t you think it qualify to be a good painting

Jeongjo: This…heaven is not being fair

Kim Hong Do: Heaven is not being fair to those who are naturally gifted.

Jeongjo: However, as for the Queen Dowager to change her mind set, it is already too late

Jeongjo rolls up the painting

Kim Hong Do: Even if it is already too late, however…Shin (“I” as you address yourself in the present of the monarch as a subordinate or official) don’t want to give up on this apprentice

Jeongjo takes another look at the painting.

Jeongjo & Queen Jeong Sun meets each other with their entourage at the palace gardens

Jeongjo: May I ask what do you intend to do today. Today I will be going to the mountain to end the ritual ceremony

Queen Jeong Sun: Your “Hare me” (Grandmother) would want to finished off & end what I have been tracking down & arrest these past few days

Jeongjo looks at the smiling Queen Jeong Sun

(Queen Jeong Sun is more a political adversary rather than family to Jeongjo. Her family comes from the influential “Noh Ron” (Old Faction) who during the former King Yeongjo’s (Jeongjo’s grandfather) reign thrives in political favours. You may know from “Yi San”, they had a hand in the demise of Jeongjo’s father, Crown Prince Sado)

Punishment apparatus is being tested for execution, placing a dummy (a clay vase) as the other apprentices watch on the side lines as they went through testing trails

Guard: Pull….slowly,

It takes a few people to manage the contraption. The boulder is secure, with a single chop from an axe cuts the rope, the boulder release with heavy thud crushing to the base, as the apprentices looks away as the sound of the thud was loud & scare them. The boulder is raise to reveal that the vase is broken into many pieces. All of them came to take a closer look at the dummy. Shin Young Bok looks worried & leaves, as he goes to in, he sees Shin Yun Bok returning, she look dazed. He calls out for her

Shin Young Bok: Yun Bok! Yun Bok! Where did return from?

Shin Yun Bok doesn’t acknowledge his call as she just walks straight ahead. Shin Young Bok follows her out of curiosity.

Kim Hong Do pours tea into 2 cups. Shin Yun Bok is sitting in front of him

Kim Hong Do: Drink this.

Shin Yun Bok bows to thanked him & pick up the cup, hold it with her 2 hands & shivers

Kim Hong Do can see the shivers in her hands

Kim Hong Do: I wouldn’t think you would have return

Shin Yun Bok: Since it is I who drew it, I definitely will bare the responsibility

Kim Hong Do: The punishment of crushing of hands will begin immediately

Shin Yun Bok: Now what must I do?

Shin Yun Bok resign to her fate as Shin Young Bok over heard it from outside the door & is shocked

In the streets Kim Jo Nyun (correction from Kim Soo Nion) walking with his trusted sidekick Sasuke, give an analysis on what Kim Hong Do will do next

Kim Jo Nyun: No matter what, as to Dan Won, it doesn’t bring the slightest of advantage or benefits. Regardless, if it is his own hands or the hands of his beloved pupil. Dan Won wouldn’t be so easily will yield just like that. He will looks for other alternative tributaries, definitely. Is it really interesting? This is 2 gifted talent’s battle

Sasuke: Orrishin, it looks like you really well verse knowledge of these people.

Kim Jo Nyun: Is it? Just a touched on it briefly (laughs)

YI Jung Suk in front of a wine tavern. She is to run an errand for Kim Hong Do

Kim Hong Do: At noon, in the street market, you will see an apprentice making an appearance; you just help me to tell him this.

It is Shin Yun Bok entering the wine tavern

Yi Jung Suk: Excuse me, May I asked if Mr. Dan Won sent you to come here

Shin Yun Bok: Yes, it is, so….

Yi Jung Suk: It is good that you are here. Take this letter to & go below the Gwangdo Bridge & find a Mr. Gong

Shin Yun Bok: Er! Is that all it was said?

Yi Jung Suk: Yes, please be quick on your way, Orrabunim said that not to stall even for a moment notice.

Shin Yun Bok: Orrabunim?

Yi Jung Suk: Yes, our Dan Won Orrabunim

Shin Yun Bok: Ah! You are from Mr. Dan Won’s household

Yi Jung Suk: Household?

Yi Yun Suk is shy. It is also indicate that usually if you refer to household can means wife

Yi Jung Suk: No…no…I am not…yet. No matter what, Orrabunim asked to immediately make your journey. Please leave quickly

Shin Yun Bok: Yes, I know

Below Gwangdo Bridge, there was a man waiting with a saddle horse. He helped Shin Yun Bok to mounted on the horse

Man: Get on the horse, quickly

Shin Yun Bok: Mister? This…

Man: Come. Listen carefully Artist, when you reached Pyongyang, find a Mr. Gua. Do you understand?

Shin Yun Bok: Pyongyang’s Mr. Gua?

Man: Hold tight, this horse can gallop 1000 miles a day

The Man slaps the back of the horse to get it going go a gallop

Shin Yun Bok: Mister…..Arrgggh! This…..

Shin Yun Bok gallops away

Dohwaseo, Jang Byuk Soo’s room

Jang Byuk Soo: Have you found who the apprentice?

Kim Hong Do: I have found him

Jang Byuk Soo: You have. Fine. It is great that you have found him. No matter whether you have found him or not, today you definitely need to disable whose hand, isn’t that so?

Jang Byuk Soo is filling tobacco in his pipe

Kim Hong Do: It looks like you have a zest interest in this

Jang Byuk Soo laughing

Jang Byuk Soo: Of course, it is interesting. It is really interesting.

Kim Hong Do: Then who is he really?

Jang Byuk Soo: Now, can’t you really not flavour the taste? Whose hand should we disable? Or is it, to disable your very own hands

Kim Hong Do: It looks like you wouldn’t dampen your interest, I wouldn’t be worried. I am really grateful

Jang Byuk Soo just laughs

Ceremony ritual

Oracle: Kneel!!! Bow!!! Rise!!!!

All the governmental officials are doing the ritual

Oracle: Light the fire

Oracle passes the lighten torch to Jeongjo as he goes round the altar. Meanwhile Shin Yun Bok is galloping on the horse recalls

Kim Hong Do: Once the Punishment contraption is out, it needs to draw someone’s blood

Jeong Hyang: Perhaps he may want to safeguard Artist, by all means. Perhaps, what words he had spoken to Artist, as such, may be a Teacher’s final hope

Shin Yun Bok yield the horse to stop & gallops back

Ceremony Ritual

Jeongjo lights to burned the Imperial dragon to sent it up to the heavens, as the painting of the imperial dragon burns

Dohwaseo

Shin Young Bok looking at Shin Yun Bok’s brush as he takes it out from its holder & brushes the bristle on his face & hold the brush dearly

Ceremony Ritual

At the end of the ceremony as Jeong Jo looks on the burning dragon that is about to be burnt off. Kim Gui Joo & Jo Young Jung is presence in the ceremony

Dohwaseo

The Painters including Kim Hong Do are coming out followed by the apprentices to witness the punishment. Shin Young Bok looks on the punishment contraption. Jang Byuk Soo comes out with the senior painter including Shin Hang Pyeong. Shin Hang Pyeong showed some slight worry

Yi Yin Mun: Stand quietly

(Commentator 3 shall we named is Fat Apprentice)

Fat Apprentice: Yun Bok? Is he in the latrine again?

Shin Young Bok: Eh! He said he will be out shortly

Jang Hyo Won: Last night he didn’t return, it looks like he is in the “Kei Wyol Ru” (name of Jeong Hyang’s chambers in gisaeng house) already had pawned his soul

Shin Young Bok: Kei Wyol Ru?

(Commentator 2, we will name him Thin Apprentice)

Thin Apprentice: Really, it means he is with the company of a woman, played (fun) to the extreme

Palace guards come in with the Yi Pan here to pass sentence for the punishment as the Yi Pan goes up to the podium to convey the decree

Ceremony Ritual is ending

Jeongjo: Now, what is “man made” is complete?

Queen Jeong Sun’s chambers. She is having hair ornaments fitted to her hair. She is ready

Queen Jeong Sun: Let’s go

Queen Jeong Sun leaves her chambers, obviously heading to Dohwaseo to witness the punishment

Meanwhile Jeongjo is having a close look at the Shin Yun Bok’s painting of Queen Jeong Sun. He studies it

Official: Chona! The Qing Dynasty’s envoys are waiting outside to seek your audience

Jeongjo: What are the Queen Dowager’s current activities?

Official: It is said that in centre courtyard of the Dohwaseo have already placed the Punishment of the crushing of the hand contraption

Jeongjo: Is it?

Jeongjo recalls Kim Hong Do

Kim Hong Do: Shin (“I”) don’t want to give up on this apprentice

Jeongjo takes another look at the painting.

Jeongjo: Don’t want to give up on….

Official: Chona! It is getting late. If it not now…..

Jeongjo: Wait!!!!

Jeongjo focus on the mole behind the lady’s ear in the painting

Jeongjo may know the identity of the lady in the painting

Dohwaseo’s courtyard. Yi Pan (is a Minister) is reading the decree. Queen Jeong Sun is behind the bamboo screen observing & overseeing

Yi Pan: This year it have been a continuously ceremony rituals for 2 months. Chusan Chona himself is personally doing the ceremony rituals. Outrageous materials have been search & found. When the time requires to be pure & clean, the Royal Household’s Dohwaseo had been discovered a piece of Chun Hwa painting. For not being cautious, there is a need to punish the culprit. Decree that Dohwaseo Kim Hong Do to conduct an investigation on the matter to find the apprentice that drew the painting to appease the heavens & earth

Yi Pan: Artist Kim Hong Do, please step forward

Kim Hong Do bows & takes his step forward

Fat Apprentice: Mr. Dan Won…he

Man Bu: Didn’t I tell you of this earlier, the above have us all being under surveillance

Thin Apprentice: It is going to begin

Jang Hyo Won: Is this the 1st time you know of him?

Yi Pan: Artist Kim Hong Do, have you found that apprentice?

Queen Jeong Sun is curiously a waiting for the answer as Kim Hong Do doesn’t give a reply

Yi Pan: Who is he? The apprentice

Shin Yun Bok gallop back to the capital

Shin Yun Bok: Give way!!!!

Shin Yun Bok races across the bridge

Dohwaseo

Everybody waiting anxiously for Kim Hong Do to give the answer that the people are getting tense on their faces

Meanwhile, Shin Yun Bok is still galloping back

Dohwaseo:

Yi Pan: Who is he?

Kim Hong Do turns around to look at Shin Young Bok

Kim Hong Do: The culprit, I have yet to have found him. I am ashamed to Chusan Chona & all the senior staff in Dohwaseo, for giving their trust & confidence in me, that I disappointed everybody. No matter what, I will take the punishment, I will not say anything

Yi Pan: Do you know what this will lead to? If you can’t find the culprit, you need to take the punishment in its place. This is to say that your own hands the ones to be disable

Kim Hong Do: Yi Pan Orrishin (I should think he is the Minister of Arts). He is just a young apprentice who aspired to have an artist’s dreams. If Dohwaseo emerge this kind of painting, it is the fault of the apprentice, then didn’t give proper guidance to the apprentices is the fault of the Bureau Artist themselves. As the Senior of Dohwaseo, this punishment let me the one to be takes it. Please pass sentence to me

Kim Hong Do falls on his knees to bow lowly. Yi Yin Mun is shocked

Yi Pan: You weren’t able to find that apprentice….

Yi Pan stood up to pass sentence

Yi Pan: Everybody listen carefully, Artist Kim Hong Do created disturbance to the Dohwaseo’s principles & the not being able to find that apprentices who had tainted the purity of the Ceremony ritual, according to customary punishment, will takes over the place of the apprentice for punishment. Kim Hong Do, punishment of the crushing of the hand

Palace Guards: Yes

Palace guards drag Kim Hong Do to the punishment contraption ties his left up & puts the right hand through a lunette (a hinged 2 part yoke) then hinges the wrist in place with a shackle. Kim Hong Do looks up & the suspended boulder, as he sees his right hand being prepared & ready. He looks around

Yi Pan: Begin!

Outside Dohwaseo

Shin Yun Bok return to Dohwaseo & dismounted in front of the entrance, weary & breathless & runs it

Dohwaseo

As the executioner is about to raise his axe to cut the rope. Shin Yun Bok rushes in to the entrance to demanded to cease action to stop

Shin Yun Bok: Cease action, please stop!!!!!!

Everybody is surprise by the barging Shin Yun Bok. Shin Yun Bok sees Kim Hong Do is already locked at the punishment contraption as the execution cuts the rope, the boulder crushes down

Shin Yun Bok: Teacher!!!!!

Then all stop. The rope didn’t fully cut through & was barely inches from his hand. Kim Hong Do was relieved

Shin Yun Bok: Teacher!!!!

Shin Yun Bok rushes in to Kim Hong Do & tries to release him

Shin Yun Bok: How can you be foolish, Teacher? Teacher!!!!!

Shin Yun Bok tries to untied Kim Hong Do

Shin Yun Bok: Teacher, what is it going on here?

Queen Jeong Sun wasn’t please with the present commotion

Shin Yun Bok: Please release him, Teacher

The guards take Shin Yun Bok away

Shin Yun Bok: Let me go, please…let go of me!!!!!

Shin Yun Bok is drag away to meet with Yi Pan

Yi Pan: How dare you, Apprentice? How dare you in the presence of Queen Dowager to create such a scene?

Shin Yun Bok: I have something to say?

Yi San signal the guard to release their hold on her

Shin Yun Bok: The apprentice….that drew…the painting is

Shin Young Bok then stood up & confesses

Shin Young Bok: It is I!!!!

Everybody is looking at Shin Young Bok. Queen Jeong Sun is getting anxious as the commotion of declaration suddenly unfolds. Shin Young Bok comes to kneel beside Shin Yun Bok in front of Yi Pan

Shin Young Bok: It is I. The person who drew the painting

Shin Hang Pyeong is shocked. Shin Yun Bok protest & shouts

Shin Yun Bok: No, it is not like that. It is I. It is my painting

Shin Young Bok: No it is not. It is I, because he wants to protect me that why he is telling lies?

Sin Yun Bok: Hyung!!!!

Kim Hong Do sits there tied up as the 2 brothers’ tussle in taking the blame & shouting their guilt at Yi Pan

Shin Yun Bok: It is my painting, please killed me

Shin Yun Bok: Why? Why should you bear the responsibilities of the Chun Hwa’s notorious furies?

Shin Young Bok: It is not because of you. It is also not because for me

Shin Yun Bok was already in tears & her voice is already hoarse

Shin Yun Bok: Then, what it is because for? Why should Hyung do this? Please say something, Abuji. Yes?

Shin Hang Pyeong can only give a grunt

Shin Young Bok boldly walks away as Shin Hang Pyeong pulls Shin Yun Bok back

Shin Yun Bok: Hyung! Hyung! Please let me go

Shin Hang Pyeong: Are you crazy? To draw such a painting, created chaos at Dohwaseo, you need to have a clear head, are you sober?

Shin Yun Bok: So that is why I need to bare the responsibility? I need to….

Shin Hang Pyeong slaps Shin Yun Bok

Shin Hang Pyeong: It looks like you have yet to have a clear head. You not only you need to be a Royal Bureau (Oh Jin” Artist (Oh Jin – It is the Artist who draw the King’s portrait) but need to be a “Cha Bi Dae Rong” Artist.
Shin Yun Bok: Then, why are you so aloof & indifferent

Shin Yun Bok kneel before Kim Hong Do to beg & crying

Shin Yun Bok: Teacher, now we should go to Dohwaseo to say the truth about the whole thing.

Kim Hong Do: Your Hyung because of you, had to go to Danchongsuo (it is department that handle ingredients for Dohwaseo). It is because of you.

Shin Yun Bok: I still can’t comprehend. What is so wronged about that piece of painting? It needs to crush a hand for it & also sent to exile from the capital. What is it, actually?

Kim Hong Do drinks a shot & takes a chopstick to have some dish

Kim Hong Do: Dohwaseo is that type of place

Shin Yun Bok holds on to Kim Hong Do’s arm

Shin Yun Bok: Please I beg of you to save my elder brother, it is I who had done wrong. Let me get sent in to exile

Kim Hong Do: Have you seen this hand yet? Have you seen it yet? Your Hyung because of you was willing to forsake his own hand. Have you ever, shows a slight understanding & sympathy for your Hyung’s sincerity? It is because of your drawing skills is a race against time that makes every minute & second counts. Value time as gold

Shin Yun Bok gets away from Kim Hong Do’s grips & runs away & running into the busy streets as she runs & knocks a few people over, recalls what Shin Young Bok said to her

Shin Young Bok: The natural talents that are bestow upon you that is different from other, as the likes of me I have never dare to wish for, for the gods to have it bestows this gifts.

Shin Yun Bok already ran out the perimeters of the city into the woodlands where she trips & falls on to the ground. She gets up & starts running, recalls what Kim Hong Do said

Kim Hong Do: Value time as gold to able to draw. Do you want your Hyung’s sacrifice to go to waste?

She goes to a huge tree where there are stone stack mounts. (It may be for religious purpose or Shaman practices. It is just convenient that it is there)

Shin Yun Bok: What is painting, what is reckoned for? What is painting?

Shin Yun Bok sweeps through the stone stack mounts

Shin Yun Bok: What is Hyung figuring? Figuring what? Reckoning what?

Shin Yun Bok throwing tantrums with the stones

Shin Yun Bok: What it has been this way? What is painting suppose to be? I don’t want anything. I don’t want any of it. I don’t want it. I don’t want it!!!!!!

Shin Yun Bok mows down the stack of stone mount

Shin Yun Bok: Just leave alone

By this time all the yelling, Shin Yun Bok had already lost most of her voice. She then picks a large stone & was about to throw it when she realize how sharp this stone edge was, she looks at her placed hand

Dohwaseo, Shin Hang Pyeong is contemplating in his room

Shin Hang Pyeong: Finally only left this only child, also that child’s hand. Fine! This is enough

Shin Yun Bok sobbing with stone in her left hand ready to strike on her right hand

Wine tavern Kim Hong Do was already so drunk to be able to walk straight, topple onto other customer’s table. Yi Yin Mun is trying to help him up

Kim Hong Do holding at Yi Yin Mun’s hand

Kim Hong Do: Ah! Here is the hand (laughs) No matter what it is said, I did save that little brat’s hand

Jeong Hyang’s chambers. Jeong Hyang is nursing the injured Shin Yun Bok as she puts a cool towel on her forehead. It could be that Shin Yun Bok is running a fever & is delirious. Shin Yun Bok had her hand bandage (but I don’t think it is done professionally) as she moans & cries

Shin Yun Bok: It is…..is me…..Hyung….don’t leave…no…no…it is not Hyung

Jo Young Jung nodded

Jang Byuk Soo: Now he doesn’t no longer had the reason to remain at Dohwaseo, let us send him warmly off

Jo Young Jung: We need to handle this properly. What if he stayed in Han yang, then goes on to dig up on other matters, it will more harm than good, are you listening?

Jang Byuk Soo: In a few days I will chased him away. He is just a locust (pest). He can’t escape from the palm of our hands (grip)

Everybody laughing with confidence as they drink

Uigembu. Kim Hong Do reading through a book in the library. It is a report on the death of Seo Jing.

Kim Hong Do: (reads) The year is Kyung Su, April the 24th. Artist Seo Jing is murdered. Uigembu had ruled it as murdered due his attitude that he is eccentric & arrogant that he was probably killed by his enemies. Seo Jing usually paints people, (Seo Jing is drawing while looking on to his daughter playing) He doesn’t even get involves in Dohwaseo’s activities, especially the ones that are larger but all of the sudden was being called to do one. His funeral was conducted by his good friend Kim Hong Do closes the book & recalls

Thin Apprentice: What is going on?

The apprentice leaves as Kim Hong Do look strangely at the presence of Jeong Hyang in his study. Jeong Hyang bows to greet him. Kim Hong Do is taken by surprise visit

Kim Hong Do: Look at you talking there. The natural talents that are bestow upon you that is different from other, need to show some gratitude. You are really nagging. Just shut the mouth of yours. You are getting heavier

Shin Yun Bok: What should I be grateful for? Dohwaseo is saying that I am drawing Chun Hwa painting. Teacher because of me nearly lost his hands for my fault. My only elder brother because of me was force to go to Danchongsuo. What does he want me to repay him back?

Kim Hong Do smack Shin Yun Bok’s buttock:

Kim Hong Do: You really want a beating don’t you, because of your hand, your Hyung is forever rotting in Danchongsuo, isn’t that worth any price to it?

Shin Yun Bok: Wouldn’t it be just fine that I just chop off my hand. Let me down, please

Kim Hong Do: Is it, I know?

Kim Hong Do goes to a water fall then throws Shin Yun Bok in to the water with a splash. Shin Yun Bok struggles in the water to keep a float. (It looks like the same waterfall that Kim Hong Do was in, in the tiger’s episode)

Kim Hong Do: Is it very cooling?

Shin Yun Bok struggling

Kim Hong Do: You are really an idiot

Kim Hong Do: You want to chop it off, then go & chop it off. Chop off your hands & legs as well. Your Hyung although because of you went to Danchongsuo, your Hyung is really very pitiful. You also damage my “heukrip” (Gat. It is a Korean man head dress). This is really on your good fortune

Shin Yun Bok then really started to disappear from the water, badly could able to see her hand as it sink down. Kim Hong Do goes to the water

Kim Hong Do: Hey! Kid!

In the water almost drowning, she sees Kim Hong Do at the surface then looks at her hands as she slips to a slumber & sinks in deeper into the depth of the water

Shin Yun Bok: Hey! (“I bo shio” means Mister or someone that you don’t know his name) You can’t enter through there that way is the way out

Kim Hong Do leisurely enters Dohwaseo

Kim Hong Do: Oh Ho! Did I not had told you before that I want to sell this to Mr Kim Hong Do?

Kim Hong Do continues on his walk

Shin Yun Bok: Hey! I am telling you to leave here as soon as possible

Other Painters spotted Kim Hong Do

Painter: Aren’t you Mr Tam Won? How are you?

Shin Yun Bok is surprise at what the other painters have just address him

Shin Yun Bok: Tam Won?

Kim Hong Do walks down the steps

Kim Hong Do: Who might this be? I am so glad to have met you all. It really have been a while

Shin Yun Bok: Kim Hong Do?

Kim Hong Do: This person I don’t seem to recognise

Shin Yun Bok then misjudge her step & loses her balance & falls

Shin Yun Bok: Arrgggh!!!!!!!

Chorus: Arrgggh!!!!!!!

Kim Hong Do turns around to catch Shin Yung Bok in a single movement into his arms, both have a moment to exchange glances then Shin Yun Bok realise that the wind screen who had not had any support is about to fall on them

Shin Yun Bok: Arrgggh!!!!!!! The wind screen

Kim Hong Do supports it just in time. In an awkward position, where he was holding Shin Yun Bok with one arm & has to support the wind screen with the other. A very comprise position

Chorus: Oh!!!!!

Kim Hong Do realise the awkwardness, laughs & throws Shin Yun Bok onto the ground. Shin Yun Bok moans on the ground

Kim Hong Do: What do think you are doing? Didn’t I ask you to carry the wind screen in?

Shin Yun Bok gets up as they was a curious crowd are watching them

Shin Yun Bok: Yes….yes

Shin Yun Bok goes & carries the wind screen

Kim Hong Do: The wind screen was nearly being damage. Goodbye

Kim Hong Do takes leave with Shin Yun Bok following behind carrying the wind screen

Dohwaseo Pavilion

Shin Young Bok: The boy has gone to the latrine, why is he still not back from it yet?

Commentator 3: If he gone there, he need to finished completely before he can come out of it

Apprentice shouting on the arrival of Kim Hong Do

Man Bu: He is here….he is coming. Mr Kim Hong Do has arrived. Tam Won? What?

As Kim Hong Do enter from behind, the apprentices scram to their places. He inspects & scans the apprentices like a hawk as the apprentice could feel his sharp stares at them. He goes to Man Bu:

Kim Hong Do: May I ask what is your age?

Man Bu: This year, I am already 35

Kim Hong Do: Aigoo! Then you are a Hyung Nim

Man Bu: Aigoo! No I can’t be refers to as that. Please treat me as casual. Just casually will do, Mr Tam Won

Other apprentices were giggling. Kim Hong Do turns around to silence them

Kim Hong Do: Well! Well! Casually

He comes to the front & shouts

Kim Hong Do: What are you waiting for? Why aren’t you bring it in?

Shin Yun Bok brings in the wind screen

Shin Yun Bok: Yes

Shin Yun Bok takes it from the back to the front side stepping on others. Commentator 2 puts his leg out & nearly trips Shin Yun Bok.

Kim Hong Do: Put it down here

Shin Yun Bok opens it up & returns to her place

Shin Young Bok realise why Shin Yun Bok took so long at the latrine. Jang Hyo Won stood up

Jang Hyo Won: The journey must have been hard on you Mr Tam Won

Kim Hong Do turns to Jang Hyo Won:

Kim Hong Do: Who are you?

Jang Hyo Won: My position is I am Apprentice Monitor of the apprentices, Jang Hyo Won. What is the class doing? Hurry up & sent greetings to the teacher

All: How are you?

Queen Jeong Sun’s chamber

Jeongjo is playing Chinese chess (Qiangqi) with Queen Jeong Sun

Jeongjo: Today Mr Tam Won finally starts his lessons. “Gua yan” (“I” that is how the King address himself) am really curious to know what method of ways he is going to use on the matter, aren’t you also feeling the same way?

Queen Jeong Sun: In 10 years the world have change a lot. I am more worried on what method of ways that he might use

Queen Jeong Sun makes a bold move on the chess board

Dohwaseo

Kim Hong Do: Today’s lesson. We will copy from a model of the paintings from this wind screen

Jang Hyo Won raised his hand

Jang Hyo Won: Teacher! Copy from a model was taught on the previous lesson

Kim Hong Do: Is it?

Queen Jeong Sun’s chamber

Jeongjo: It may be so. But I do feel that Mr Tam Won’s method will not be the convention method that others perceive

Jeongjo eats Queen Jeong Sun’s (the chess piece marked “horse” an equivalent to a ) “knight” on the chess board

It looks like serious chess players

Dohwaseo

Kim Hong Do turns the wind screen upside down. Everybody looking in awe

Kim Hong Do: Shall we draw it this way?

All: Eh?

Kim Hong Do: Let’s start

Jang Hyo Won thinks it is a joke, but Shin Yun Bok looks at it with some interest

Queen Jeong Sun’s chamber

Queen Jeong Sun: Wouldn’t his method that he going apply will be most suited to be able to find that apprentice? This point is still can’t be determine yet, do you think so?

Queen Jeong Sun eats Jeongjo (piece is mark as “elephant also have the same sound as Minister” I think an equivalent to a) “bishop”

Jeongjo: Yes it is, it may need to use a method that is most suitable

Dohwaseo

Kim Hong Do: Each of you will draw the picture, you will tend to memorise the whole picture in your mind. Once you attempted to start drawing, you need to have the whole picture in the head before you start to move that brush of yours. This have been turned upside down, don’t you think there is another fresh perspective to it

Queen Jeong Sun’s chambers

Jeongjo: There is an ancient saying “Dynasties will change, but attitudes don’t”, Ma Ma

Jeongjo picks up a “horse” chess piece

Jeongjo: Mr Tam Won, no matter if it was in the past before or even now present, it is still an excellent horse (steed)

Jeongjo places the “horse” nearest to the Queen Jeong Sun’s chess territory

Jeongjo: It is “Jang gun” (General or Checkmate)

Jeongjo smiles

Dohwaseo

Kim Hong Do: Come & look at it, can you not use your mind to be able to store the picture & copy but to able to use your mind to draw as it originally, to have a renew perspective in looking at it

Apprentices are taking notes. Shin Yun Bok gazing

Queen Jeong Sun’s chamber

Queen Jeong Sun: Chusan’s actual ability to change with each passing day

Jeongjo: That is because of Ma Ma’s allowing for Sueson (Grandson) to do so, that I am able to do it

Queen Jeong Sun: So it seems

Queen Jeong Sun takes her “Cannon” (equivalent to “castle”) & place out of her boundary

Queen Jeong Sun: Check to block (pong gun), then after check mate (Jang gun)

(If one side perpetually checks & the other side perpetually chases, the perpetually checking side will have to stop or be rule to lose).

Queen Jeong Sun takes a sip of drink as the chess game become intense

Jeongjo: Having a game with Ma Ma is like threading on thin ice

Queen Jeong Sun: Who will be the victor, we need to wait for that last & final move before deciding? Don’t you think so?

Dohwaseo

Kim Hong Do: You have always been comfortable with what you are used to, now you need to use a fresh perspective in looking at it. The artist is always be prepare, is the most 1st important key point

Shin Yun Bok fully agrees to Kim Hong Do’s explanations

Episode 2 Punishment of Crushing of the hand

Pil Chul’s office. Pil Chul name is Jang Byuk Soo

A painter comes in to report to Jang Byuk Soo. Most probably his spy on Kim Hong Do

Jang Byuk Soo: What is he doing, Tam Won?

Spy: That is…

Jang Byuk Soo: What is he doing?

Spy: He asking the apprentices to copy from a model of a painting

Jang Byuk Soo: He just asked them to copy from a model of a painting

Spy: Yes

Jang Byuk Soo: Letting them copy from a model of a painting

Spy: Yes, it is also place upside down

Jang Byuk Soo: Upside down?

Spy: Yes

Jang Byuk Soo: Upside down? Have asked him to investigate, he turns the wind screen upside down? Jie! Jie!

Dohwaseo Pavilion

Apprentices having a go at it

Kim Hong Do: What is a painting?

Everybody went to look for the answer in their books

Kim Hong Do: It is not written in the books. You need to say it with your own words with your best understanding of your knowledge of what it is? What is painting? You! (Commentator 3)

Commentator 3 stood up to answer

Commentator 3: Ah! Yes, painting, is putting what is in front of your eyes into paper to draw it out

Kim Hong Do: Rambling

Next is Shin Young Bok

Shin Young Bok: Yes, a painting…..painting

Kim Hong Do: Next!!! You

Next is Commentator 2

Commentator 2: Painting needs to use the brush…

Kim Hong Do: If you don’t use a brush, can you use a ladle to draw?

Next is Jang Hyo Won

Jang Hyo Won: Yes, painting is to capture a moment in a moving world’s environment

All: Oh!!!!

Kim Hong Do looks at the reaction of awe from the apprentice on Jang Hyo Won’s answer

Jang Hyo Won: This points that this world, where Chusan Chona have yet to see places, as to role of us artist is to captures this moment for the Royal Household & its authority

Kim Hong Do applause Jang Hyo Won “righteous” answer” followed by others

Kim Hong Do: What is your name?

Jang Hyo Won: I have said it before, my position is the apprentice monitor, and Jang Byuk Soo the Pil Chul is my father. I am Hyo Won

Kim Hong Do: You!!!

Jang Hyo Won: Yes, Mr Tam Won

Kim Hong Do: You are really a man of many irrelevant words. You are still a person who has yet become an artist. What is in your mouth is already speaking like one? Fine, Again. Is there anyone else who will like to give it an answer? Artists like you have never given any thoughts of the meaning of what is a painting!!!! Why did you all come to Dohwaseo then? You are all just a group of scrawls

Shin Hang Pyeong looking out his window. Yi Yin Mun, a painter is arranging his brushes. Yi Yin Mun is a Royal Bureau Artist & a friend of Kim Hong Do. Shin Hang Pyeong turn to him

Shin Hang Pyeong: Hey! Yin Mun

Yi Yin Mun: Yes

Shin Hang Pyeong: Honestly speaking, do you what lesson is Mr Tam Won giving?

Yi Yin Mun: It is hard to say. He is just said to wait & see

Shin Hang Pyeong: Wait & see?

Shin Hang Pyeong is thinking hard, darting his eyes from side to side

Dohwaseo Pavilion

Everybody had stop painting, while Shin Yun Bok is still busy at her drawing

Kim Hong Do: That little brat who is still moving his brush. You, young wretch!!!.

Shin Young Bok signal Shin Yun Bok to stop drawing

Kim Hong Do: You come & answer it. What is a painting?

Shin Yun Bok stood up

Shin Yun Bok: Painting?

Commentator 3 whispering to Man Bu

Commentator 3: Will this be correct this time?

Shin Yun Bok: Ah! Painting!

Paused a while

Shin Yun Bok: Isn’t it the meaning to represent miss & long for.

Kim Hong Do is curious by her given answer

Kim Hong Do: Is it? Why do you say it is?

Shin Yun Bok: Yes, Missing & longing can become a painting, just like a painting of a person is something that someone longs for, isn’t it?

Kim Hong Do: Continue…

Man Bu: Wah! The answer is not bad

Shin Yun Bok: If there is someone you yearning missed & long for, because you often think of her, so that is why you put paint that someone on paper. That comes to the results that you miss & long for that someone when you see that painting

Kim Hong Do: Miss & long for a person can become a painting? Then…..

Shin Yun Bok: If we see that someone on the painting, even if we would have forgotten her earlier, it will bring back that sense of miss & long for. Isn’t that why people will yearn, miss & long for that someone in the painting?

Kim Hong Do: To see the painting will bring a sense of miss & long for….

Shin Yun Bok: Yes, It is to say….it is to say. Painting represents the meaning of miss & long for

Everybody is surprise at Shin Yun Bok’s answer

Kim Hong Do: Miss & long for? Painting, is the meaning of miss & long for?

Shin Yun Bok was please with her answer as Kim Hong Do looks at her

Kim Hong Do: What is your name?

Shin Yun Bok: Yes, My name is Shin Yun Bok

Kim Hong Do looks at her. Then Kim Hong Do puts 9 dots on paper

Kim Hong Do: By tomorrow you need to find the solution to the question as your assignment

All: Assignment?

Kim Hong Do: Without a slightest paused in your brush, you need to thread through all these 9 dots. Use common strokes to make into 4 strokes to complete it. Do you understand?

All: Huh!

Kim Hong Do: Today lesson is until here

Shin Yun Bok: 9 dots?

Jang Byuk Soo enters which looks like a very dusty pharmacy Cho Sek Shi. It shelves is fill with jars & jars containing strange solution & matter & old man a strange looking character is attending there

Jang Byuk Soo: Doctor!. Dr. Bak Bek

He looks like a chemist or an alchemist rather than a medical doctor

Bak Bek: Pil Chul from Dohwaseo, what do you want? Personally coming to my rundown Cho Sek Shi

Jang Byuk Soo: There is something I like to seek you advice

Bak Bek: Sit down

Jang Byuk Soo: What is the reason behind turning the wind screen upside down?

Bak Bek: Turning the wind screen upside down?

Jang Byuk Soo: Yes

Bak Bek: Upside down painting. If the painting is not seen in its true form, there is no use of it

Jang Byuk Soo: See it in its true form? A painting in its true form.

Jang Byuk Soo gave it some thought

Jang Byuk Soo: Ah! Copy from a model of the painting on the wind screen. The lesson had been taught before. The painting in its true form is already done. You are really indeed Dr Bak Bek after all

Bak Bek: Is that what really you need to observe in your eye?

Jang Byuk Soo: Eyes?

Bak Bek: Do you think is this? (points to the head) This (eyes) is the artist’s ability because it need to observe

Jang Byuk Soo: You are saying that this method can see through an artist’s extraordinary abilities

Bak Bek: Of course, but who is the person who brought the subject of the assignment

Kan Byuk Soo: It is Tam Won

Bak Bek: Tam Won, Is it Tam Won? Is it that pain in the neck Tam Won? It looks like Dohwaseo is going to get very interesting.

Bak Bek laughs

Jang Byuk Soo leaves the pharmacy in disgust.

Jang Byuk Soo: That old man, each time I see him, my temper will rise.

He blow the does from his clothes & walks off

Dohwaseo

Official meeting with Jang Byuk Soo on the progress of the finding

Official: Are you saying that the investigation is being under way smoothly?

Jang Byuk Soo: I am in the midst of observing

Official is disappointed at the answer as his head is on the line

Official: How can you say it is under observation? The Queen Dowager had give her decree on the matter

Jang Byuk Soo: What? Why should it be a decree?

Official: The Queen Dowager felt that we handed the investigation of the matter to Tam Won, we ourselves are no lifting a finger on the matter. The Queen Dowager’s stern attitude towards this matter we can’t go through this obstacle in a breeze so easily. You should know all about the punishment of the crushing of the hand. Once that punishment contraption is out, we need to at least surrender a hand for it. This is the practice.

Jang Byuk Soo: I understand all too well. I have forewarn the senior artist & the artist to be caution to keep silent about the seriousness of the matter so as not ignite any fear among the apprentices & may have a riot on our hands. They just think that Tam Won is here to give them lessons. He should be quick in finding who the apprentice is

Official: I don’t really know if we can innocently wait that long for a result. What if, I said, if we can’t find out who is that apprentice. The Queen Dowager will definitely want someone to be responsible for the fault. This we are not so sure who that person might be. This is to say….

Jang Byuk Soo: This is to say, what?

Official: We could properly control Tam Won to do the task, you and I, our hands

Official takes a fan & chop it at his wrist to indicate what may happened to them

Official: Maybe we need to surrender it to the punishment. Are you listening?

Jang Byuk Soo: Is it really what the Queen Dowager had decree? That we need punish by using that punishment?

Jang Hyo Won & commentator 2 are eavesdropping on the conversation. Jang Hyo Won is shocked

Commentator 2: What are they saying?

Jang Hyo Won: They want to punish by using the punishment of crushing of hand

Commentator 2: Who? Who wants to punish by using the punishment of crushing of hand?

Jang Hyo Won: Don’t know? Said something about Tam Won, the after said about the punishment pf crushing of hand

Commentator 2: Tam Won? Mr. Tam Won, would it be

Commentator 2 running to spread the news

Commentator 2: Bad news…Bad news…Bad news…Bad news

All: What is it

Commentator 2: Mr. Tam Won…Are they crazy?

Shin Young Bok: What is it?

Commentator: That strange & weird assignment, if we don’t complete it

Commentator 3: What if we don’t complete….

Commentator 2 showed the action of the most likely punishment. The punishment of the crushing of hand

Commentator 2: It will be dealt with this punishment

Commentator 3: Punishment of the crushing of hand. Is this true?

Painter: Is this true?

Everybody practice on Kim Hong Do’s assignment

Kim Hong Do: Without a slightest paused in your brush, you need to thread through all these 9 dots. Use common parallel to make into 4 strings to complete it. Do you understand?

Commentator 3 is already eating the crush papers, Man Bu is cracking his head. Everybody is trying all ways to thread the dots in a single stroke. Jang Hyo Won is also finding it difficult. Shin Young Bok is trying to figure it out as he watches Shin Yun Bok doesn’t seem least bother about the assignment, she picks up the paper & looks through it & ponders on how it can be done as she plays with her brush. The rest everybody is tearing their heads out

All: Ah! I couldn’t care less anymore. What is this? This is really. This doesn’t have an answer at all. Quiet!

Cho Pal in an arts & literature shop. Cho Pal’s actual name is Kim Soo Nion, one of the biggest business merchant in Han yang

Kim Soo Nion: Is that all that have been brought out?

Owner: These have been copied from all the complete works of “The Romance of Three Kingdom” all have been collected from all that is available in the market. A lot of readers are now looking originals for “The Romance of Three Kingdom”

Kim Soo Nion: Is that so? Then tried & get it someone to do the copies. I will inform the our shop, you can go there to get the paper materials

Owner: Yes

Kim Soo Nion: Let’s go

His female sidekick is with him, as they were about to leave, the owner stop him

Owner: Orrishin! Would you like to take a look at this for a moment?

Kim Soo Nion: What is it?

Owner: recently there is an artist who brought in his works in. It is only 5-6 pieces. The response for it is not bad. Should we continue to place orders?

Kim Soo Nion: Is it?

Kim Soo Nion takes a look at the works

Kim Soo Nion: Spring in the gardens. The flowers have blossom in full. In the midst of the spring’s scenery, red is the one that blossom the most (He is reciting the poetry on the painting)

Owner: However, in the painting the trees only have green leaves; there is nothing about a red blossom.

Kim Soo Nion: The flower blossom in on the man’s face. He must have drank liquor to have result in his face being red as like a flower blossom. This is very clever

Owner: Yes it is, It looks like this young artist’s work also have its talent in it

Kim Soo Nion: His brush strokes are not bad.

The painting is signs “Sun Moon Mountain Person” (Il Wyol San Nim).

Kim Soo Nion: It is Sun Moon Mountain Person (Il Wyol San Nim). Where did these comes from all of the sudden?

Owner: This I am not so sure. But he had said that tomorrow he will bring some more new works over

Kim Soo Nion: Is it? “Sun Moon Mountain Person (Il Wyol San Nim). The price must given to be reasonable

Owner: Yes

Kim Soo Nion walks out of the shop

Shopkeeper: You are here, Da Ri

People in the street greets Kim Soo Nion as he walk pass without taking any heed of the greetings

Street: You are here Da Ri

Kim Soo Nion can only mutters the name

Kim Soo Nion: Il Wyol San Nim? Il Wyol San Nim?

Then we are revealed the identity of Il Wyol San Nim. It is none other than Shin Yun Bok. Shin Yun Bok drawing & sign the name Il Wyol San Nim then seal it with the Il Wyol San Nim.

Yi Yin Min looking at a stack of paintings with Kim Hong Do

Yi Yin Mun: Is this really all from the same person? The differences is vast

Kim Hong Do: It is drawn upside down. It is often to allow a person to draw it upside down, it is in the mind of the artist, so that is why it is able to produce such a strange painting

Yi Yin Mun: It is best said but to see this painting upside down, where there is such person who would be able to draw so beautifully

Kim Hong Do: Is it? How about seeing this pieces, is it alright?

Kim Hong Do showed a painting on the next table. Yi Yin Mun wanted to lift it up but Kim Hong Do stops him

Kim Hong Do: Ah! Use your eyes only!!

Yi Yin Mun: Really!

The actual wind screen is place upright then flow down to the upside down painting as though it is like a reflection on water

Kim Hong Do: How is it? Is this the same or it isn’t?

Yi Yin Mun turns the painting around

Yi Yin Mun: How can this been drawn upside down?

Kim Hong Do: Oh Ho! You are like as before, don’t believe in people. Isn’t this what is drawn in the artist’s mind but what is drawn in front the eyes of the painter of what he can see. This is not for everybody to learn. You must naturally have the razor sharp eyes like the tiger in order to be able to achieve it

Yi Yin Mun: Then, who drew this?

Kim Hong Do stops Yi Yin Mun from knowing who is the person who drew the painting

Kim Hong Do: Now it is still too early

Nightfall. Man Bu, Commentator 3, Shin Young Bok at the fence

Man Bu: I have really never stay behind after class

Commentator 3: Ah! What can we to do? We need in order to protect the hand of ours, we need to come up with a solution together

Man Bu passes his pipe to Commentator 3

Man Bu: I have an apprentice in Dohwaseo for nearly 10 years. This situation I know of it well

Lady: Cuckoo! Cuckoo!

A lady cuckoo carrying a child on the other side of the fence

Man Bu: She’s here

The lady Cuckoo throw a rope over the fence

Commentator 3: What are we going to do?

Man Bu: It is cold…cold

Commentator: Grab hold of tightly

Man Bu tries pull the rope in, on the other end tied a package as they reel it in over the fence

Man Bu: Thank you, it is a great relief to have you around, Cuckoo

Lady: You definitely need to do your utmost effort. This year you need to pass that exams.

Man Bu: I will work hard, going to work hard

Lady Cuckoo is Man Bu’s wife

Lady Cuckoo: Do you want me to climb over? It been a while since I have seen my husband (So ban nim)

Commentator 3: Hyung! Ask her to come over

Man Bu: There is no nee. No need. No need. There is no need to do so. You definitely must not come over

Commentator 3: Why?

Man Bu: The more we don’t see each other, will become fonder. Cuckoo!

Lady Cuckoo: What you say is very thoughtful? Then I will take my leave first to return home. Ah! In the biscuits, specially make some patterns on it. Husband you need to keep those to eat them yourself. You must.

Man Bu: Yes, I will. Also to you, don’t forget that you should take care yourself. Cuckoo!

Lady Cuckoo: Cuckoo!

She then leaves

Commentator 3: Hyung! Quickly. I am smelling the smells from the biscuits, I am starving to death

Man Bu: Yes, Let’s go

Apprentices having a feast with Lady Cuckoo’s supper

Man Bu: It is all because yearning for to this husband, that she will make this supper

All: Yes!!!!

Man Bu: Have some more

Commentator: This is best, the best in the world

Man Bu: Come, come, come, let’s drink

Commentator 2 having a try at the 9 dots with Shin Yun Bok guiding

Commentator 2: Like this, here. (Pointing to the 1st dot on the left)

Shin Yun Bok: Then move to the right

Jang Hyo Bok looks on

Commentator 2: Here (the 2nd dot)

Shin Yun Bok: Move to the right

Commentator 2: This (the 3rd dot)

Shin Yun Bok: Move to the right

Commentator 2: It is in empty space

Jang Hyo Won: You are stupid. The teacher doesn’t want us within the scope to understand the matter?

Shin Yun Bok: It definitely needs to be that way

Man Bu: Ah! You really don’t have brains, definitely need to be that way

Other: Really don’t have brains!

Shin Yun Bok: Why? Definitely needs to be that

Jang Hyo Won: Starts from the left extremity dot

Commentator 2: Here

Jang Hyo Won: Yes

Then others added comments in guiding the directions, it up with a mess. Commentator 2 ended losing his patience.

Commentator 2: How is this really done? This is really, because of this, I couldn’t go to the gisaeng house. Will be tomorrow we also will not able to make it to the gisaeng house

Commentator 3: Now the atmosphere is very nerve wrecking, it will be better if we should go there the next time, Apprentice Monitor

Jang Hyo Won: You are idiots. If we don’t understand the flirtatious express & daydream can we be consider as artist. Since the ancient times, takes holding a bottle wine as like ink & takes a woman’s body as like a piece of paper. Isn’t it consider these as a true artist

Commentator 2: Yes it is, it is. Wah! So suave…suave, let’s go…go

Jang Hyo Won: You all must not leave any traces. Because of passing the knowledge of being distinguish & admirable (more like dissolute & loose), I have ask for the capital best “Geum Gi” (gayageum gisaeng Jung Hyang to come

(Gayageum is a Korean zither like string instrument of 12 strings, usually make out of silk. There are 13,17,18,21 normally in North Korea & 25 string variants)

Commentator 3: “Geum Gi” Gayageum gisaeng. Is she from Song Do, that Jung Hyang?

Commentator 2: Jang Hyang!!!!! Wah Apprentice Monitor Mansei (10 thousand years)!!!!

Shin Yun Bok doesn’t know what the other apprentice is so excited about

Commentator 2: We need to find solution to this matter quickly

The next day, Dohwaseo Pavilion. Kim Hong Do showed the answer on how to thread the 9 dots, in 4 strokes. All the apprentices are receiving punishment by stretching their arms out holding their ink stone in each hand. Ink stone do weight a fair bit of weight

Kim Hong Do: This is the answer. You all dare to say that there isn’t an answer. Weren’t you all putting your thinking caps together that you couldn’t even come out with an answer? What were you all doing together? How can you all become future Royal Bureau Artist to paint for the country. Dohwaseo will deteriorate with you group of idiots. Quickly end this

Jang Hyo Won: However, it is only that solution. The positioning of the strokes had already left the existing 4 corner frame.

Kim Hong Do: There are only 9 dots out there, there isn’t any what so call a 4 corner frame. Who ask you that there is a need to be within a frame. This is because you all have restricted yourself to do it within the frame, that is why you can’t find the answer. Break off from that frame, then you will be able to find the answer

Kim Hong Do turns around

Shin Yun Bok: Teacher! If it is this way, then it only takes 3 strokes you can thread all the dots

Apprentices are suffering in agony under the weight of their ink stone

Kim Hong Do: Three strokes? Three strokes. It shouldn’t have any answers

Shin Yun Bok: There is an answer that exist & have yet to be discovered

Kim Hong Do: Then, you little brat, you should know the answer?

Shin Young Bok: Yun Bok?

Kim Hong Do comes to the front tears the existing paper for a new clean sheet & puts 9 dots on paper.

Kim Hong Do: You come & draw it

Shin Yun Bok stand up & goes to the front

Man Bu: What is he trying to do?

Shin Yun Bok looks at Kim Hong Do, Kim Hong Do hands her the brush, she receive the brush with 2 hands, being watch in a distance peek by Jang Byuk Soo’s spy, then Shin Hang Pyeong join it to peek as well. The spy is shocked at his presence

The Spy: Il Chul Orrishin

Shin Hang Pyeong just asks him to be quiet, as he watches the scene unfolds. Shin Yun Bok takes the brush from Kim Hong Do then goes to the paper & studies it. She then links with a shape of an opposite “Z” with the strokes going out of the boundary & coming back to link the dots, hence done in 3 strokes

Shin Yun Bok: Isn’t this is the answer?

Kim Hong Do looks at it

Kim Hong Do: In the perspective of the seriousness, the amount of strokes can’t thread this dots. This points on the top, the centre & the bottom, just lightly brush through. It can’t be consider that this had be thread through fully. Is it?

Apprentices laughs

Shin Yun Bok: If you see this drawing, what Teacher said is also not wrong

Kim Hong Do: Is also not wrong? What do you mean?

Shin Yun Bok: Yes, just think about it when the strokes are lengthened. The strokes lengthen. The larger increase of the angle, the gradient will be steeper. In the opposite of the smaller decrease of the angle, the gradient you will discover that it will be slowing become narrower

(A lesson in geometry)

Commentator 2: That kid? I can’t understand a word he is saying?

Kim Hong Do: So….

Shin Yun Bok: So if the angle is smaller, the centre line’s gradient will be narrower

Commentator 3: What is this? What is he trying to do?

Man Bu: I don’t understand either.

Shin Yun Bok: Please look closely. This way there is infinity & endless

Shin Yun Bok runs out of the pavilion to emphasis her point

Shin Yun Bok: Without bound & restriction, continue to draw to infinity, then this stroke without limitation move back to here….

Shin Yun Bok then runs through & threads all her dots at the centre

Shin Yun Bok: Like this….continue…continue…continue to go in to the infinity boundless & endless continue to draw then the strokes angle & gradient will becomes narrower, it is to say that the centre stroke’s angle will be smaller, then after it can thread all through the dots.

Then Kim Hong Do pictures what Shin Yun Bok’s explanation, on how the strokes goes through infinity & makes it way back to thread through the centre dots along the way then to go off to infinity & return to thread the last dots & see it

Commentator 2: He can debate with Teacher on method

Jang Hyo Won: Yun Bok, where does he able to share any abilities?

Kim Hong Do looks at the drawing then at Shin Yun Bok who is please with her experiment

Kim Hong Do: This…is quibbles

Commentator 3: Quibble?

Shin Yun Bok: Why do you say that it is quibble?

Kim Hong Do: Answer need to be comprehensive. Everybody need to see clearly in order to understand is answer. Now that answer of yours, can you be able to showed to the people sitting out there to see it clearly

Shin Young Bok looks worried for his younger brother

Shin Yun Bok: Yes….

Kim Hong Do looks at Shin Yun Bok

Shin Yun Bok: It can be done

Apprentices are in agony. Kim Hong Do is surprise by Shin Yun Bok’s remark

Kim Hong Do: Then come & try

Shin Yun Bok: However….please can you agree to let me have all the papers to be pasted at the sides

Kim Hong Do: You want all the paper pasted at the sides

Shin Yun Bok: Yes….also tens of ink stone ready to grind ink stick to ink, please

Kim Hong Do: Also tens of ink stone ready to grind ink stick to ink

Shin Yun Bok: You need to have these 2 things to be able to achieve it. I definitely can be able to thread that centre line dots

Kim Hong Do: Then what you are saying, if there isn’t an endless amount of paper & ink, then you can’t have it drawn out

Shin Yun Bok: Then it also to say, if there isn’t an endless amount of paper & ink, earlier it was said that it can’t be proof that you could be able to see it

Commentator 2: What is this then? Who is wining?

Jang Hyo Won: Shut up!

Kim Hong Do: Everybody will want to end this lesson quickly

Kim Hong Do faces the class

Kim Hong Do: This question before it is solve, you need to keep in your heart to ponder deeply. Today’s lesson is until here

Apprentice drops their ink stones & leaves class. Shin Yun Bok takes her leave. As the apprentice leaves the pavilion, Yi Yin Mun comes in

Yi Yin Mun: Hey! Tam Won. How is it, have you found the culprit?

Kim Hong Do looks around, then Yi Yin Mun looks at the drawing on the paper

Yi Yin Min: Isn’t it? Ha! Ha! You really have your ideas

Kim Hong Do smiles

Yi Yin Mun: Is he the one who drew the 2 paintings exactly the same person?

Kim Hong Do pacing up & down

Yi Yin Mun: Ah! How can it be like this? It looks like you have to painfully lose a very gift person. Who is this apprentice? Can you even tell that to me?

Kim Hong Do: Don’t be upset. Now it is still not the time yet

Kim Hong Do looks at the threaded dots

Kim Hong Do: I need to go & confront this boy

Yi Yin Mun: If you confront him what will you be able to so?

Kim Hong Do: if I don’t confront him, & accidentally crush a hand of an innocent kid, if it was you, will you be able to sleep soundly. You are really comfortable

Kim Hong Do leaves

Jang Hyo Won in civilian clothes looking himself at the mirror. Commentator 2 is holding the mirror for him. Jang Hyo Won is a Yanban (Aristocrat).

Commentator 2: You look handsome, not bad…not bad

Jang Hyo Won: Are they all here yet?

Commentator 2: Don’t know, do you want me to bring them over?

Apprentices excited as they come in

Apprentice: Where is it? We are very energetic…not bad

Jang Hyo Won opens his scandal wood fan

Jang Hyo Won: Let’s go

Apprentice: Gently & slowly

Jang Hyo Won: Xu! (asking the apprentices to quiet down as they enter the gisaeng house). Enter quietly

Kim Hong Do walking the grounds of Dohwaseo spotted an apprentice like headless chicken. It is Commentator 3

Kim Hong Do: Little wretch!!! You there, looking so nervous, in this late in the night, where are you going?

Commentator 3: Yes, That…I am going out for drinks

Kim Hong Do is surprise at Commentator 3 dressing

Kim Hong Do: What? Look at you, are you a Shaman or something?

Commentator 3: No I am not, because it is Apprentice Monitor’s birthday, we have arrange an appointment to go to the Gisaeng house together

Kim Hong Do: Gisaeng house?

Commentator 3: No, it is not, takes a woman’s body as like a piece of paper. Wine as like ink. We had arrange together to go & dissolute

Kim Hong Do: Take what as what? If I catch you all, I will let you all experience a taste of what hell is a beating

Commentator 3: I’m sorry, this is the honest truth. I had said that I didn’t want to go, it is not that I am lying

Kim Hong Do: Who is now currently at the lodging house (sleeping quarters of the apprentice)?

Commentator 3: Lodging house? Young Bok with Yun Bok

Kim Hong Do: I know, carry on

Commentator 3 is surprise that Kim Hong Do will allow him to leave

Commentator 3: Eh! Yes

Commentator 3 runs hurriedly

Shin Hang Pyeong washing & cleaning his brush & laughing. He is with Shin Young Bok

Shin Hang Pyeong: I have heard about what had happened at the lesson. I heard that Yun Bok solely find out about the way of an answer to that difficult question

Shin Young Bok: Yes. He had thought of a way that even Teacher would have never thought of it. Is it really great?

Shin Hang Pyeong: Of course it is. A peacock among the flock of birds. But…it has been long establish that the lance (weapon of hunting) can bring the head of the bird (dead). Do you understand what I mean? Therefore you need to really take care of her

Shin Young Bok: Yes Abuji. Please rest assured

Shin Hang Pyeong: Fine. What is Yun Bok doing now?

Shin Young Bok: She said she was tired, so she is going to bed early

Shin Hang Pyeong: Is it?

Meanwhile at the Shin Yun Bok lodging house, Shin Yun Bok dressed in civilian clothes even stick on some false facial hair. Kim Hong Do is waiting outside the lodging house. In her room, Shin Yun Bok makes a dummy on her bed as an illusion. Shin Yun Bok playing with her false facial hair

Shin Yun Bok: It is alright

As Kim Hong Do walks closes to Shin Yun Bok’s lodging house, Shin Yun Bok takes her painting & blow off the light. Kim Hong Do sees the light off & waits to see what happens. He sees Shin Yun Bok sneaks out from the lodging house as Kim Hong Do goes to hide himself to avoid being detected. Kim Hong Do curious what is Shin Yun Bok up to as Shin Yun Bok scuffs the scroll up her sleeves, especially with the disguise of the facial hairs.
Kim Hong Do: Where is this boy going to?

Shin Yun Bok goes to a store to pick up an ornament & looks around suspiciously as though she know that someone is trailing her. Kim Hong Do goes in to hiding to avoid being seen by her

Shopkeeper: Do you want it?

Shin Yun Bok: It is fine

Shin Yun Bok continues on his way. Kim Hong Do comes out from his hiding & went to the store to see what Shin Yun Bok was holding & continues to trail her. Shin Yun Bok knows that she is being follows & starts to beat off the tracks of the one who is following. In a busy dark alley loses her sight as Kim Hong Do goes searching, Shin Yun Bok was pretending to be a customer in a drinking tavern. She had already taken of her outer coat to be comfortably sitting. Once the coast is clear she left

Shin Yun Bok goes to the Art shop. The owner then pull her to one side

Owner: Did you bring it?

Shin Yun Bok: I have brought it

Shin Yun Bok draws the scroll out from her sleeves & passes it to the Owner & he had a look at it

Owner: Wah! (laughs with glee then became serious) A Yanban (Aristocrat) holding to a servant girl’s hand.

Shin Yun Bok: Then so….

Owner: Then this girl allows her hand to be hold by a man, the rest do you need not go any further. Of course this topic is really not bad at all, however….

Shin Yun Bok: However….what is wrong with it?

Owner: Now, this rock is slightly….

Shin Yun Bok: This…rock…slightly

Owner: How should I put this & say?

Shin Yun Bok: Said what? What is it?

Owner: Aigoo! The bright eyes of that beautiful lady, who wouldn’t it not stir any men’s heart

Customer: It is. This is better that some scholar’s rough calligraphy works. This convention painting works is the most real to reality. The longer you see it the more you will appreciate the taste of it

As the camera pans the painting

Shin Yun Bok giggles at it

Shin Yun Bok: Oh! 5 nyang. But to have over heard such great reviews, it is all worth it.

Shin Yun Bok walks with her money only to have Kim Hong Do stop in her tracks. Shin Yun Bok looks at Kim Hong Do & walks away on the other direction but was with hold back by Kim Hong Do

Kim Hong Do: Where are you going?

Shin Yun Bok: Is there a matter looking for me?

Kim Hong Do: Look at you little brat….

In a drinking tavern. Kim Hong Do having a meal & drinks. Kim Hong Do drinks in a gulp as Shin Yun Bok timidly looks on. She tries to serve the drinks but Kim Hong Do wouldn’t allow her to do it

(It is customarily that you don’t pour your own drinks)

Kim Hong Do: Il Wyol San Nim?

Shin Yun Bok: I beg you can you close an eye on the matter. If my Abuji (Shin Hang Pyeong) finds out, I will be severely punished

Kim Hong Do: Then why did you do it in the 1st place, do you really need the money?

Shin Yun Bok: No it is not. From the beginning I had never thought of wanting to sell the works

Kim Hong Do: From the beginning you had never thought of wanting to sell the works, then when was the time you have thought of wanting to sell them

Shin Yun Bok: That…that…gradually there was rumours spread, heard that many people appreciate these kind of works

Kim Hong Do bangs this hand on the table

Kim Hong Do: You wretched kid, are you crazy? You have such a gifted talent that you can only sell painting works for just mere 5 nyang

Shin Yun Bok: Eh?

Kim Hong Do pours wine into Shin Yun Bok’s wine bowl

Kim Hong Do: Drink up!

Shin Yun Bok stood pause before deciding to take the drink

Shin Yun Bok: Yes

Shin Yun Bok drink away from Kim Hong Do out of respect

Kim Hong Do looks at the painting

Kim Hong Do: Look at this young man…looking at this man…looking at this painting. Ah! This is really high…high. Looking at your drawings in the spring’s scenery. Let me hear it & see, why would you had come to draw this type of drawings

Shin Yun Bok: That is…I also don’t really understand it myself. It is that I also bring it in on what I always seen often on to the paper

Kim Hong Do: Really! It is innate…innate. You have done well. But why do you draw the woman view from her back facing away?

Shin Yun Bok: Eh?

Kim Hong Do: That is the lady who is holding the straw hat on her back

Shin Yun Bok then realize which painting is Kim Hong Do was referring to

Shin Yun Bok: Ah! Ah! It is wicker hat (“Song Na” It is mainly a weather protectorate use by Monks). It is not a straw hat.

Kim Hong Do: Ah It is not a straw hat but a wicker hat

Shin Yun Bok: Yes

Kim Hong Do nods. Shin Yun Bok wasn’t sure where Kim Hong Do is leading to his line of questioning

Kim Hong Do: Why did you draw view from the back?

Shin Yun Bok: That is…that lady’s view from her back is out of the ordinary. That kind…feels like as though the kind of sorrowful, that type

Kim Hong Do: It that why you took the brush & pen it?

Shin Yun Bok: Yes, without give a 2nd thought, this hand started to take up to draw

Kim Hong Do: So it is. This have arouse your inner feelings

Shin Yun Bok: Yes, it is really exciting, like the surrounding thousand of elements in the world have just freeze. All of that…

Kim Hong Do: Yes it is, at that flash of the moment you don’t get to see anything around you

Shin Yun Bok: Yes, that is correct. I was really like that

Kim Hong Do: You tend to forget what state you are in. Without Boundary. You have experience to that extend

Shin Yun Bok: Without boundary?

Kim Hong Do: You had arrived to this stage

Shin Yun Bok: I do feel it

Kim Hong Do: You have experience to that extend

Kim Hong Do pours & drinks his wine then let out a sigh. Shin Yun Bok is overjoyed.

Shin Yun Bok: But…why are you sighing?

Kim Hong Do: Tomorrow, Dohwaseo is needs to carry out the punishment of crushing of hand

Shin Yun Bok: The punishment of crushing of hand?

Kim Hong Do: Need to find out the person who drew the painting, need to execute that punishment to him

Shin Yun Bok is shocked

Shin Yun Bok: That is…what do you mean?

Kim Hong Do: What did you have to draw that painting? What is the use if you are a gifted talent? Then after you may not even be able to hold a brush & draw

Shin Yun Bok: Not even be able to hold a brush & draw?

Kim Hong Do: Do you still don’t understand what words that I am saying to you? Tomorrow, Dohwaseo needs to bring out & catch hold that person who drew that painting, need to execute the punishment of crushing of the hand. On the punishment apparatus, that will bring permanent damage to both hands. Then after you will not be able to do anything

Shin Yun Bok gets all work up that they should carry out such a punishment on her

Shin Yun Bok: Why need to permanent damage the hands, Teacher? Is that piece of painting wielded such a heaviest of punishment? What have I done wrong? Didn’t you say it is without boundary? But it is a piece of painting. But it is just a piece of painting. It can’t be…no…it can’t be. It is a piece of painting. I….need to go now

Shin Yun Bok takes her leave & put on her shoes

Kim Hong Do: Bok! Yun Bok! Come & sit down

Shin Yun Bok: No need

Shin Yun Bok walks away

Kim Hong Do: Yun Bok!!!!!

Shin Yun Bok dazed through the streets. Flashback on how her father taught her to draw, playing with shadow play of a butterfly & then tracing the shadow on wall. Kim Hong Do taking her hand & guides her in her stroke when they 1st met. Weeping she starts to run down the street, out of breath stop in front of the entrance of the Gisaeng house

Customer: Why are you blocking the entrance to the place?

A gisaeng comes out to greet Shin Yun Bok:

Gisaeng: Omo! What a handsome & charming person? Quickly come in. Everybody have been waiting for you

Gisaeng hooks her hand by Shin Yun Bok’s elbow & walks in to the Gisaeng house

Shin Yun Bok: Who is everybody?

Gisaeng: Who else can it be? The young & beautiful. Like the ones like you, who is feeling down, you need to open up. Jung Hyang will be coming over

The room where the Apprentices are having a fine time

Commentator 2: Come! Come! Come! Congratulations!

All: Congratulations!!!!

Jang Hyo Won drinks up in one shot

Everybody applauded

Commentator 2: Which side do you want to start, left or right? Come start from the left,

Everybody drinks & is fed by an accompanied gisaeng. Gisaeng bring Shin Yun Bok to the room

Gisaeng: Just play to your heart’s content

Jang Hyo Won: Who is this here? Mr. Miss and long for. Painting is of miss & long for. Is it Mister?

Commentator 2: You, why are you here empty handed?

Shin Yun Bok: My heart had arrived here, it is alright

Shin Yun Bok is slightly tipsy from her previous drinking session from Kim Hong Do

Jang Hyo Won: Heart is arrived here

The brush holder is empty from its brushes & is filled with wine. Shin Yun Bok looks at it as it is being poured to the brim

Jang Hyo Won: Drink up! You bring that share of heart of yours, I need to see how sincere is it?

Commentator 2: A feminine little brat like you, how can he be able to drink that much of wine. Why? Do you want to start crying tears not to do it? Hyung Nim, I beg you

Everybody is laughing at Shin Yun Bok. Shin Yun Bok takes the brush holder & stood up

Shin Yun Bok: This wine what am I to be afraid of?

Shin Yun Bok gurgle it down at one shot much to the surprise of others especially Jang Hyo Won

Meanwhile Jang Hyang & her servant carrying her gayageum walking at the corridors

Shouts: Come, let’s play with me

A gisaeng playing the Janggu (an hourglass shape drum with 2 heads beaten using 2 bamboo sticks)

Commentator 3 is already piggyback a gisaeng, singing

Commentator 3 Gently & softly, my love…..

Shin Yun Bok is still continue drinking why the rest is already on their feet dancing. As she is really much very drunk, the door opens slowly to reveal Jung Hyang. Jang Hyo Won is smitten by her beauty. She enters the room & takes her place. Everybody sat back on their places. Jung Hyang greets them

Commentator 2: Aigoo! Beautiful…beautiful

Jang Hyo Won: You are Jung Hyang?

Jung Hyang: yes. I am Jung Hyang

(Jung Hyang is a gayageum famous gisaeng, so she only sells her music & not her body)

Commentator 3: You are really beautiful, really

Jung Hyang prepares her instrument to start playing

Jang Hyo Won: That will be fine, come over & sit here (by Jang Hyo Won’s side)

Jung Hyang smiles

Jung Hyang: I am a “Geum Gi” I don’t entertain men

Shin Yun Bok smiles

Shin Yun Bok: Still as before a whole body full of thorns

Jung Hyang looks at Shin Yun Bok & Shin Yun Bok looks back. Obviously know of each other from previous encounter at the cloth shop

Jung Hyang: The more beautiful the flower is, the more it will carry thorns.

Shin Yun Bok: Are you boasting yourself here as a beautiful flower, in my lifetime this is the 1st time I have ever come across such comments?

Jung Hyang: Is it one is to boast oneself as beautiful, will that beautiful flower change to being not so?

Shin Yun Bok: If there isn’t anyone who appreciates it, even how beautiful the flower is, is of no used?

Jung Hyang: Flower is just flowers, to evaluate as beautiful or not, it is just a passing figure of measurement

Shin Yun Bok looks at Jung Hyang

Commentator 2: What…what, you have already known each other previously?

DrunkenS: What are you doing, you ugly woman?

Drunken thrown a wine cup at Jung Hyang

Drunken: What are you starting to play?

The wine cup broke a string from the gayageum & some droplets of wine remnants from the cup splatter on Jung Hyang’s clothes & face

Jang Hyo Won: You wretched brat. What are you doing?

Jung Hyang just takes her handkerchief & wipes the droplet off

Commentator 2 slaps the drunken

Commentator 2: If you are tired, sleep

Jang Hyo Won: Are you alright? We, the group of apprentices are already very drunk, there is some impoliteness on our part, we are sorry

Jung Hyang: It has already happened, what the use of apologizing?

Jang Hyo Won: The string is already broken, the gayageum can’t be played. I like to invite you to come over here to have a drink with me. Ah! My position is Apprentice Monitor. My name is Jang Hyo Won

Jung Hyang: The music tune is ….

Jang Hyo Won is surprise that she could still play her gayageum with a broken string. Everybody was caught to their attention

Jung Hyang : “Dong Chon Nion Lo, Han Jang”

Jung Hyang plays beautifully as she strums the strings with speed & precision

Jang Hyo Won was slightly disgusted that he couldn’t ask her to do other wise. Everybody start to drown at the lovely music tune. In her tipsiness, Shin Yun Bok gets hypnotic with the music tune of Jung Hyung’s gayageum. On hearing the tune, they are transporter to a distance grass pasture with only with Shin Yun Bok & Jung Hyang playing alone, where Shin Yun Bok returns to her happy childhood when she was riding on her father’s shoulder as her father blows a flute while her mother at the side dancing away to the tune with such great happiness. Shin Yun Bok is drowned by those happy memories, as they walked past them into the distance. Jung Hyang ends the piece as they both return to reality & smiles as Jung Hyang knew she had met someone (Shin Yun Bok) who appreciate her music as it should be

Jang Hyo Won: What are you all doing? Why aren’t you clapping your hands?

The atmosphere is then spoilt

Everybody are clapping their hands. Shin Yun Bok takes leaves from the room

Commentator 2: Aigoo! It is really, come, let’s us drink, come

Shin Yun Bok walks pass Jung Hyang & turns around

Shin Yun Bok: Your performance is really excellent

Jung Hyang acknowledge the praise as Shin Yun Bok leaves the room

Yi Yin Mun’s house. Kim Hong Do is staying there as a guest

Kim Hong Do is pacing in his room & Yi Yin Mun looks at Shin Yun Bok’s painting

Yi Yin Mun: It is said to be a convention painting, however the brush strokes are really energetic

Kim Hong Do: Look at it carefully. It may be so that these brush strokes will no longer been see in the future.

Yi Yin Mun looks a t Kim Hong Do

Kim Hong Do: It is really a lost. It is really painful pity…pity. Is there be any other way we can think of?

Yi Yin Mun: But Tam Won, if you don’t keep to the centre of focus, your own hands will not be able to retain.

Kim Hong Do: There is an ancient saying when heaven opens, we may be able to find a new way out of it

Kim Hong Do is trying to find a way

Outside the house, Yi Yin Mun’s sister Yi Jung Suk tries to eavesdrop when the door opens wide & frighten her & Kim Hong Do

Kim Hong Do: Frighten me!

Yi Yin Mun: Oh! It is Jung Suk, you are here.

Yi Jung Suk: Yes, Orrabunim

Yi Jung Suk is holding a tray

Yi Yin Mun: What are you doing here?

Yi Jung Suk: Oh! That…I am afraid that you will be thirsty in the night, so I brought you some water

Kim Hong Do: Yes…Thank you

Kim Hong Do takes the tray from her

Yi Jung Suk then bows & run to put on her shoes, as she about to leave

Kim Hong Do: If it wasn’t for Jung Suk, this lodging house will definitely have someone who had died of thirst. Jung Suk!!!

Yi Jung Suk: Yes

Kim Hong Do: Sleep well

Yi Jung Suk: Orrabunim, you too

Yi Jung Suk runs of but stop short

Yi Jung Suk: Ah! Be careful of mosquitoes

Kim Hong Do: Yes, we will

Yi Jung Suk runs off

Kim Hong Do: Wah! Jung Suk have really gown up

Yi Yin Mun: Grown up & matured, in order to wait for someone

Kim Hong Do: Who?…Me? This person you are really. Don’t say nonsense. Quickly leave, & sleep

Yi Yin Mun sit down to put on his shoes

Yi Yin Mun: When to live in Pyongyang for a period, now looks like you have fast become a person from Pyongyang

Kim Hong Do: You, quickly go to bed

Yi Yin Mun: Sleep well

Yi Yin Mun bid farewell & Kim Hong Do just smiles

Jang Byuk Soo walking in the dark street suspiciously & goes to a mansion house. It is Wu Sang Dae Gam’s private residence. Wu San Dae Gam, the uncle of Queen Jeong Sun is Jo Young Jung

Jo Young Jung: What is happening to the matter? Has Tam Won find out who the person is?

Jang Byuk Soo: Tomorrow we will know it all

Jo Young Jung: Then, has he really already finds out about who the person is?

Jang Byuk Soo: This is Tam Won, even if I don’t asked him to find out, he will definitely so it on his own accord. Tam Won have been taken in by the apprentice’s gifted talent. Nonstop praising him

There is Kim Gui Joo, he is Queen Jeong Sun’s elder brother. He holds the position as Han yang’s Yi Pan sitting with them

Kim Soo Nion: So there is someone that worth Tam Won’s praise?

Kim Gui Joo: If you can’t find out who the apprentice is, then Tam Won wouldn’t be able to keep his hands, isn’t it?

Jang Byuk Sool: It is will be a great opportunity not to missed

Kim Gui Joo: We thought we go get rid of Tam Won, this pain in the neck, isn’t it so

Jo Yung Jung: Yes it is, we can’t have Tam Won staying in Han yang, for us it is does not proof beneficial

Jo Young Jung: Chusan Chona, what did he go & particularly when all the way to find Tam Won, wouldn’t it there are ulterior motive to this

Kim Soo Nion: What is there for you too worry so much?

Jo Young Jung: Aren’t you worried? Tam Won really have such a pair of razor sharp eyes, then his eyes for recognizing talents is just as sharp

Jang Byuk Soo: Then what is it?

Kim Soo Nion: If it really a pity & a lost, Tam Won wouldn’t he think & finding a way to save this apprentice’s life. If this is so, Tam Won would had to face with 2 choices in front of him. Bring this own to carry out the punishment or leave Han yang. If he leave Han yang, what the incident that happened 10 years ago would be forever shut close. Even if he managed to stay in Han yang after, he will never been able to draw again, just like he was before, continue to be the eyes for Chusan Chona. Then even if is so, Tam Won will be just a tiger without its teeth. This is just an evaluation from a business man point of view

Gisaeng House. Near a pond

Shin Yun Bok trying to get some fresh air to clear some of her drunkenness. She looks up & sees a full moon & tries to hold the moon with her fingers. She then sees her hand & grips it, sad that she need to lose her hand.

Jung Hyang comes out from a room after a performance with her servant as she passes by the pond where Shin Yun Bok stops her in her tracks. Jung Hyang relay her intention to the Servant to ask

Jung Hyang: Just go & ask if there is anything the matter?

The Servant goes to Shin Yun Bok & relay the message

Servant: May I ask if there is anything the matter?

Shin Yun Bok: Can you be able played another tune for me to hear?

Shin Yun Bok stretches her hand to show the 5 nyang she earned from her sale of her drawing at the shop.

Jung Hyang looks at the coins

Jung Hyang: What is this?

Servant: It is 5 nyang

Jung Hyang: 5 nyang? You go & ask if he wants to listen to a tune that is worth of 5 nyang?

Servant: Do you want to listen to a tune that is worth 5 nyang

Shin Yun Bok: This 5 nyang is my every thing

Jung Hyang: Relay to him. I don’t really want to know these things

Jung Hyang walks away only to have Shun Yun Bok grab hold of Jang Hyang’s wrist & turn Jang Hyang towards her. Servant is shocked at the skin contact

Jung Hyang: What are you doing?

Shin Yun Bok: Until tomorrow, this hand of mine will no longer exist. This 5 nyang, is the sale of this hand final piece of painting that it will ever produce

Jung Hyang feels for Shin Yun Bok

Shin Yun Bok: From the sale, I want to spend my final night, accompanied by the sound of your gayageum…together

Shin Yun Bok teary eyes pleading to Jung Hyang

This is my 1st attempted to do a sageuk drama. Using all the historical dramas I have seen as a base & the closes to the recent finished drama “Yi San” This drama is of that era, what was to be known as the Renaissance period of Joseon Dynasty? The arts were very much developed during this era. Seong Seon Yeon who later became Royal Consort Eui Bin was depicted as a 1st female painter in the Royal Bureau of Painting (Dohwaseo) who advanced her painting career then only enter the palace at the aged of 29, which is a bit advance in age to be a Consort of the palace. Well that is another story. Although history can be dull but with the romanticised of these saeguk, it gives you some historical facts to it. I am not a historian bluff, but a moderate fan of the “wuxia” novels mainly the ones from Louis Cha & an avid fan of the NHK Taiga drama since 2002.

Background

The year is 1766. Joseon Dynasty Royal Bureau of Painting (Dohwaseo). Kang Soo Wan wanted to present “Saesun” (Crown Grandson, later Jeongjo), a portrait of his father the disgrace Crown Prince Sado. He secretly commission Royal Bureau of painting (Dohwaseo) artist Seo Jing to do the portrait. In the midst, he met his death. Investigation to the death of the Royal Bureau artist & his wife who was mysteriously brutally murder led to nowhere. Seo Jing’s daughter is missing without a trace

Bureau of Painting (Dohwaseo) artist Kim Hong Do finds out about his good friend’s brutal death & tries to look for traces to his friend’s death but to no vain. However, he only managed to have found a portrait painting without a drawn face.

10 years later, Kim Hong Do returns to head the Bureau of Painting (Dohwaseo) & to teach the apprentices. He wishes that every year he would meet some talents with potentials. This year have prove disappointing as the talents he meets are just average. However there is one that catches his attention….

Shin Yun Bok is a talented painter who disguised herself as a boy to search her father’s murderer & meets Kim Hong Do, a master painter who guides her into being a great painter. Kim Hong Do is the man who teaches Shin Yun Bok how to paint & they develop a strong friendship as mentor & disciple

Opening scene

Kim Hong Do walks up the hill as a narrator to the story. There are inter cut scenes of Shin Yun Bok drawing (look like a self portrait), she is seen wearing in male clothes & female clothes hence her cross dressing. Kim Hong Do goes to an abandon house. As he opens the door, Shin Yun Bok looks up. He step in & enter the house, empty. Obviously it is seen that Shin Yun Bok & Kim Hong Do are in different time frame. In the empty house left behind Shin Yun Bok’s self portrait of herself in a hanbok mounted on a frame. Kim Hong Do touched it gingerly & cries for the lost.

Kim Hong Do: I will like to start to tell a story now about a person, my feelings are indeed of glad with joy & pain with sadness. If I think of her, I will feel glad with joy, however if I were to have lost her, I will be ridden with pain of sadness. She is already am my student, my teacher, my friend & also my love

Episode 1 – The journey paint from life

Bureau of Painting (Dohwaseo), the year 1777 the 1st year of Jeongjo reigns.

(This is also in the reign of Qing Dynasty Emperor Qian long (1711-1799), Qian long is a major patron of the art & he himself a great scholar in Arts & Literature. Obviously culture exchanges flourish during this period)

Copper coins are place on the 2 pallette dish (looks like a cereal bowl) each with tainted paint of red & blue. Obviously placing bets

Commentator 1: What are you doing? Yes is yes. No is no. Is it blue or red? Aigoo!

2 painters armed with a very big paint brush. They are Jang Hyo Won & Shin Yun Bok

Man Bu: Come, it had been 3 years that we have yet had a competition to compete.

The prize is an ink stone & a brush. Man Bu is one of the oldest apprentice artist who have been in Dohwaseo for 10 years looks more like a sport’s commentator.

(There are the 4 treasure of the study & painting, the ink stone, brush, paper & the ink stick. There are others auxiliary as well, pen (brush) holder, brush pot or holder, ink box, paper weights, seal & seal box. These are of course was being introduced extensively in the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics. I personally have a set but there are more a decorative items on my cupboard than anything. I can do some paint brush calligraphy but being a left handed it have some restrictions. My teacher said I don’t have the patience too, hence it is in storage. I know how hard is it to control that brush with the amounts of ink that you need set it on paper. The control of the ink’s input is control by the wrist & the strength. It is almost that you need to have the picture or calligraphy in your mind before setting of to put in paper. Once the brush touches the paper, there is no room for mistakes)

Dohwaseo

Man Bu: Presenting the blue “must win”, Jang Hyo Won. Presenting the red, Royal Bureau of painting “odd ball” Shin Yun Bok. Look & See! Both parties have adjusted their intake of the inks in their brush. Look! These two concentrated competitor’s eyes are not of the ordinary.

Both painters dipping their brushes in the ink to see the density

Man Bu: By the looks of it, they are ready. They already have given the signal. Fine! Now…begin!

It looks like whose brush can last the longest with ink, as the painters’ runs through their brush on paper that had been laid on the floor

3 sport’s commentators giving a running commentary

Man Bu: If you want to succeed in this competition, the brush tip must be hold very upright to have bring out the full capacity of the brush

Commentator 2: This is true

Cheering: Shin Yun Bok! Shin Yun Bok!

Shin Yun Bok looking at Jang Hyo Won as she races down the paper & vice versa

(We will have to refer to Shin Yun Bok in the female text as she is indeed incognito as a man)

Commentator 2: It looks like Shin Yun Bok’s brush looks bend. It is bent

Commentator 3: No, it can’t be, it can’t be. It looks like the ink is running out. Ah! It is a battle strategy, strategy.

Man Bu: This brush techniques is rare to be seen in 10 years

Commentator 2: It is alright…alright…Jang Hyo Won, it is alright. There is more after this, he still can go on. It is alright (He looks like a Jang Hyo Won’s supporter trying to reassure himself more than Jang Hyo Won)

As Shin Yun Bok & Jang Hyo Won, races

Jang Hyo Won: Are you going to surrender? I am doing this for you is because I felt a great pity towards you

Shin Yun Bok: You already know your own limits, to say such things

Man Bu: Doing well, doing well, only this paint brush can determine the winner, the painter’s exams, you can breeze through it with flying colours

Commentator 3: Yes it is. You need to be used to the big brush that is from Qing Dynasty

Man Bu: Yes it is true, it is true. Men! This is the main point.

Commentator 2: Is it there a lack of substance? The ink is now exceeding the paper

Commentator 3: The paper, the paper is running out

Man Bu: How can the paper run out?

They run to add paper

Jang Hyo Won: If I had to lose to a feminine weak person like you, I wouldn’t have started this competition

Shin Yun Bok: What is there in that fist of yours?

Jang Hyo Bin: You, little boy is looking for a fight

Shin Yun Bok stop & looks surprise as she looks at the floor, Jang Hyo Won is continue then stop when Shin Yun Bok stop short on track

Jang Hyo Won: Why you have now reached to this stage, you want to give up?

Shin Yun Bok put her brush down

Shin Yun Bok: Really! You are really talkative. Sheng Tu Jang (Apprentice)! Thank you

Shin Yun Bok smiles & walk away. He then looks at the paper to find that his brush had run out of ink while Shin Yun Bok still had hers

Commentator 3: Come & look, this…win!!!!!!!

Commentator 3 is roaring with laugher

Commentator 2 goes to Jang Hyo Won

Commentator 2: What had happened? This….isn’t there some problem that arise from this matter…this

Jang Hyo Won: Shut up!

Jang Hyo Won goes & confronts, the other painters are collecting their winning. Shin Yun Bok takes the prize.

Shin Yun Bok: I have the opportunity to be able to use this precious brush from Qing Dynasty. I will treasure it

Jang Hyo Won: It looks like a pig wearing a necklace in its neck. You little boy is worthy enough to use this brush

Shin Yun Bok: Why? Hate to part with it? Then, you just need to address me as “Hyung Nim” (elder brother)

Jang Hyo Won: You little brat!

Shin Yun Bok: 3….2….

Jang Hyo Won: Yah!

Shin Yun Bok: 1

Jang Hyo Won: Hyung Nim

Shin Yun Bok: Aigoo! Said it a wee bit too slow. I will use this well.

Jang Hyo Won: Actually, this belong to my father

Jang Hyo Won hold Shin Yun Bok’s arm but Shin Yun Bok flings it away.

Shin Yun Bok: A man should honour his own words. & not like as a “wench”

Jang Hyo Won: Wench? How dare you call me a wench?

Jang Hyo Won tries to pick a fight with Shin Yun Bok

Shin Yun Bok: What is it? What?

The other tries to break them up. A voice came in shouting. He is actually Shin Yun Bok’s adopted father Shin Han Pyeong who holds the rank of Il Chul in Dohwaseo. Shin Yun Bok also has an elder brother Shin Young Bok in Dohwaseo. Shin Hang Pyeong is from a family of “Jungjin” (middle class). There are a family of reputable professional artists. Obviously have contributed their service to Dohwaseo for generations

Shin Hang Pyeong: What are you all group of people doing here? Do you wish to make a journey to paint from life? Do you wish not to go?

All: No…no…

Shin Hang Pyeong: Hasten & prepare well, Students. If I count up to 10 & if it is not prepare well, all will be cancelled

All: Teacher!!!

Shin Hang Pyeong: 1…2….3!!!!!!

Everybody scatters to prepare what they are assigned to do. Filling the ink pots, preparing food for the excursion, filling the flask with what I think is rice wine. The person filling is also having a fill with it. Another prepares the brushes to take to the excursion. Then Shin Yun Bok prepares herself for the excursion. She is seen strap
